  • Advice on creating a startup web page?

I have a friend who is a writer, near to finishing her book, and she wants to have a domain and basic info page for herself and the book. It may grow as she develops ideas, but for starters she needs something simple.

Is this something I can help her create? Is there a place where I can start? Do you have a recommendation for how she can register a domain name? Begin the creation of the site?

Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Katiemack, have her register a domain name with Go Daddy. They are inexpensive and very good and you can do it all online but you can call them too 24X7. They have cheap web hosting too but there are free web hosting sites too. Here is one and here is a link for Google sites. Both are free and very easy to do.

Most Internet Service Providers (AOL or EarthLink) also offer a free personal web page for starters which is included in your monthly fee.

My advice? Crack open the wallet and pay for a web hosting service -- they really aren't that expensive (the one I use is $17/quarter).

I take it this author wants to be taken seriously, right? Nothing says "cheap" or "amateur" like a web site to promote your business that has a "get your free web site here" link at the bottom.

Go Daddy is less expensive than what you quoted and I believe they are professional too. You can read more here.

Katiemack, I will send you a PM with two companies I have experience with. I had them before I switched domain names over to Go Daddy otherwise I would have gone with Go Daddy for web hosting too.

Register the domain with godaddy. I have about 130 domains registered with them.

Then pick a hosting company and I like hostgator and hostrocket but really most hosting companies are adequate. I agree however you want to avoid the free ones to avoid the ads and popups.
