I use Registry Mechanic at home (where I first started using it) and at work. It is very effective and worth it to me and my fellow employees.

I've never done it, but I did a little research and this article may be a starting point: How Best Do I Clean My Registry? - PC World

Try AusLogics Register Defrag Joe, its free & does the job, been using it for a couple of years now. Remember that you have to be at your Desktop screen with no programs running. Take your time & do what it says & you"ll be happy as well a little more faster with your puter.

I use a free one, Glary Utilities and have been happy with it.

I used it mainly to disable all the junk startup programs that slow down the boot up process but also cleaned the registry. I'd say it now boots up in 30% of the time it was taking.

slighty off topic but worth using ...download CCleaner ( formerly crapcleaner) if you do not already have it installed, it's very useful fer getting rid of everyday junk, just be careful about checking off the "fragmented files" box ..u need to know why and what files are fragmented. you can google up CCleaner or go to FileHippo.com - Download Free Software
I personally use WinCleaner utility for registry ...good luck
