  • Getting on the Internet

    Good morning,
Received a new Compaq laptop for Christmas from my wife and now I need to get it to pick up the internet. We use AT&T for the internet and have a 2wire modem. My son has had a laptop for several years and he can't remember the password he used to get his connected. Can anyone tell me what I need to do?
    Thanks,
    Bart

It sounds like you do not have a wireless modem, but if you do the LT should show you it is available and ask you for a key. When our nephew was here while attending college, his LT used our wireless through the same key.

Just in case, I believe he and we have both saved it in our word processors. It's a good thing to save stuff like that somewhere.

If you are saying you are hard-wired to a modem, have you gone through the Internet connection wizard? It has likely changed since my WIN1898, but it is also likely similar.

Having said all that, I'm not totally sure what I'm am going to do with my Ole POC. It is dial-up on a second phone line while DW's LT is wireless on another modem. I would want to make sure that both phone lines are available at the jack where the wireless modem is, which is where we want to move my computer center.

I know . . . more than you need to know.

Try a direct wire patch cable to the modem until you solve the password problem.

        Thanks

Thanks for the quick response. The modem is wireless and I'm sort of just waiting for my son to help me out. Until he figures it out I'll stay on my desk top which I have used up to now anyway. I like the laptop idea for when I'm watching a show on TV or watching football and want to look at something at the same time. I'm looking forward to use it when we travel from timeshare to timeshare.
He says it has something to do with having to reassign a new passwork for the modem though I don't think he has done much checking so far. He is an 18 year old with a girlfriend and of course she comes before anything else.

I kinda thought you meant you need to find the wireless modem key.

I suggest you contact your provider. They should be able to tell you what to do when you tell them what modem you have, etc.

My daughter bought a new laptop and gave me her old one over christmas. she showed me how to use it before she left - only one problem, when i try to open it, it only goes so far. Now i feel like a real dummy, instead of only a partial dummy. I plan a trip to Best buy to see wht I am doing wrong. so i too am working off my old desktop, and also need to figure out how i will get on line with the laptop.
