  • IE won't open on desktop?

    Well now this is strange...

I was on the Desktop (Vista) this AM, perfectly fine. I went to upload 2 photos from Newport to the photoserver here and everything just froze. I restarted the computer. Checked the connection. Everything looks good, but when I click on IE it just thinks about it, won't connect and stops trying.

Nothing is getting out, not Dell Support, not AIM, nothing.

However I have no problems acessing the very same network from the wireless laptop.

Anyone have a clue on what gives? DS will make me miserable if I can't get this fixed before he gets up.

I am pretty computer illiterate but just had my computer crash over the break. Was running windows XP and using IE. Had antivirus software, as well. Seems to be a lot of issues with both of these.

I now use Vista and IE, although I've read that Vista has its own issues and that I should probably be using a different browser. Oh well, what do I know?

Well I "hard" started the damn thing and all seems to be in working order again. That was just too wierd for words.

I'm staying away from it for now, content on my XP laptop for the time being.

There is are really nasty fake AntiVirus malware going around

        http://www.infopackets.com/news/security/2008/20081231_400000_pcs_infected_with_fake_antivirus_2 009_software_says_microsoft.htm

I have been besieged with this piece of malware/virus on my home PC. It is really slick in that it displays a screen that looks authentic. Looks like it is doing a real Anti-Virus scan. However I did not take the bait, cause I know my software all too well.

When you try to cancel or close out the window it just opens up another prompt. I have been battling this thing since last Sunday. I have managed to minimize and corner the behavior but this thing is persistent and reappears with different prompts. When I get home later I will try a few more fixes. But I am getting ready to reimage my drive if all else fails. I think I have a variant called VUNDO.

From time to time I have had trouble opening IE or Enigma. The only cure seems to be to shut down the computer and start all over again. But then I have XP and an older computer.

The only thing you can do is set your system back to an earlier date and that will remove the virus for once and for all after you do a complete virus scan too. I had to do it with my notebook recently. Here are the instructions as I looked it up.

            http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306084

First, my husband had the same problem too and I accused him of going in a bad web site but then I got it too. The mouse pointer seems to go over an ad and then it takes over. Neither one of us clicked on that ad on the web site. There is also a car ad like that that takes over your browser but it is only an ad for that car. These ads open a new page automatically when your mouse goes over it but the other one is a trojan or worm.

I fixed it on both computers with the instructions above. It also stopped our virus program from working properly but it resolved that too by going to an earlier date.
