best place to buy new basic ($500-600) notebook computer

There were all kinds of great sales on notebooks over Christmas, but my notebook was OK then, but is continuing to crash now, and I think it may be time to replace it. I have been having daily chats with Dell (I bought the 4 year warranty...have about 5 months left on it). For the second time in 4 months Dell wants to "bring it back to the factory installed" settings. It is time to get going on taxes, using Quicken, etc, and I don't trust my computer anymore. I use my computer for email, spreadsheets (not too intense), turbo tax, quicken etc. I bought my step son a nice HP at Staples in Dec for $500. I wish I had picked up one for myself. Any suggestions of where to look now?

We like Costco for computers. They have "concierge service" on computers and a 90-day return policy. We've bought three computers from them now. Excellent customer service and tech support, and they even did a $130 price adjustment on one of the purchases.

I bought a refurbished HP Media laptop for the kids, all the bells and whistles, for about that price from buy.com. It's not "brand new", but I had a hard time telling. It also isn't going to have a multi-year warranty.

Dell also carries refurb deals.
Same warranty as buying new from them.

Being that you are having issues with Dell you might not want to go that route but I'm happy with mine.

I got my new one at Staples before Christmas. Great deal for a nicely loaded HP laptop.

I bought a nice new HP laptop from Best Buy for $650 just prior to Christmas. It was selling for about $900 and was just dropped. Nice unit.

15" screen. 250G HDD. 4G RAM. I think it's 2GHZ processor. But, I don't recall exactly. All I know is its is way better than my current laptop I got 3 years ago for $1700.

Try: DealCatcher: Free Online Coupons Dell, Amazon, Best Buy, Overstock They have a nicely equipped Dell 15.4 inch for $ 499 that ends tonight. They also had a 17" HP yesterday or Monday for a nice price.

Dell Outlet

Below is the website to the Dell Outlet. They have TONS of Previously Owned New computers, which mean someone bought but did not accept delivery, etc. You can also filter by screen size, price, etc. Also lots of these computers have upgrades added to them. I am currently looking for a new computer as well.

FYI, my computer broke a couple of weeks ago (almost 2 years old), needs a new motherboard. Thank goodness I bought it on my CC that adds an extra year after the manufacturers warranty has expired. I am able to get a new computer up to $500 plus the cost of the estimate of $35 because of they warranty. And for $67 I can purchase a four year warranty that covers everything including the battery. I am jumping all over that!!!

It is easy to use, but I do not know if you can install other software on it as easily as a Windows or a Mac

My grandkids got ASUS computers for Christmas. They are cute and a great size. DS is computer person, so he can handle problems and decided it wouldn't hurt the kids (11 and 9) to know some LINUX.
