I favor Dell by a long shot. I have purchased 7 computers over the last 6 years. I bought 6 directly from Dell and 1 directly from HP. They were all laptops except for 1 desktop from Dell.
I have never had any problems with my Dell's but the HP laptop is another story. It was highly rated but has been a dog and the service from HP is absolutely the worst.
I just purchased 2 new laptops from Dell in the last month. I buy them from the Dell Business division and not the Home division. Anybody can purchase from the business division. The business division has a different line of computers though many are similar to the home division. Pricing is very competitive. There are several advantages to the Business division such as Customer service is in the US and NOT in India and you have the option of having XP Professional installed instead of Vista. You will also get the Vista license and CD's.
The laptop I bought last week is a new Dell Vostro 1510. It has the Intel dual core processor, 3GB RAM, 250 GB hard drive, wireless, web camera, XP professional installed. DVD R/W, 15.4" matte ( non glossy ) screen, and the usual other stuff. The price was $598 as configured with free shipping. I purchased the same computer for our son in December. His configuration is slightly different due to what Dell was offering for free at the time but they are virtually the same. He loves his and it is definitely much better than the previous laptop he had.
One of my Dell laptops and my Dell Desktop are 6 years old and I have never had a problem with either one. I use them heavily and have tons of software installed including multiple operating systems.
It is difficult to compare the Dell business division computers on-line as none of the ratings such as Consumer Reports rates the Dell Business division line. You also will not find them in any store.
I look at what I want on-line and then call a specific Dell Customer service rep that I use to ask questions and finalize the purchase. He is very good and the price is the same whether you buy on-line or from him. I like to help him out as he gets as small commission and gives me an added level of service.
