  • Copying DVD Movies to Hard Drive

I got my wife the netbook that she wanted, then got a CD/DVD disk drive that works with it. What do I need now to be able to copy DVD movies off of the drive onto the hard drive so that she can watch movies on the plane without having to have the CD/DVD drive plugged into the computer. Wish I knew more about such things. Thanks in advance for all the help.

    I have an Asus netbook

go here for instructions and download "handbrake"(windows, mac, linux)

I first copy movie using handbrake on my regular computer

then put it in itunes and then on a flash drive to plug into netbook

this is on a Mac if you have windows somebody else maybe able to tell you the exact steps

What operating system is the netbook running? That's going to make a difference.

          Ah ok.

          Here's what I do.

Download DVD Shrink here. Use that to rip the DVD to an ISO file to the hard drive. This will be 4.7gb big so you want to make sure you have enough hard drive space.

Then download this Virtual CD program from Microsoft. What it lets you do is mount an ISO file to a virtual CD rom drive. Basically it puts a fake CD rom drive in "My computer" which is just that ISO file. Then you can use whatever DVD software you normally use to watch DVD's and it'll just think you're watching it off a disc.

Now, if you don't have that much hard drive space (I know some of these netbooks can be short on it), then you'll want to rip the video to an AVI file. Before I go into how to do that, let me know if the above solution works.

Hrm, I just made a reply but it said it had to be moderated first. Anyone know why some posts are moderated and others aren't?

If we think you are posting purely in order to increase your post count so that you can start sticking links everywhere you may not get to the 30 posts required!!

Oh c'mon, if I was a spammer I certainly wouldn't be this witty and charming would I? Haha.

No, I mean that I'm trying to post links to stuff that's relevant to my questions, but it kept getting my posts hung up and I didn't know why.

This post is a good example.
