Thought I'd throw that out there. I do photography so if you have any questions about cameras, flashes, lenses, etc. I'd love to shoot the breeze.

You might want to think about going to the TUG bbs and check out the Picture of the day thread which is just over a year old. Timeshare owners posting their pictures of anything and everything. Just loads of great shots.

Evemtually, when I've had enough time with my new Nikon D40 to be smart enough to ask questions, I'll probably be asking. Right now I'm still exploring the camera and it's settings to see what works for me and what doesn't.

No questions is too stupid or anything. Nobody is judging here. Everyone who has a DSLR has been in the same position as you at some point. I've you've got a question, shoot.

Disclaimer: I'm a Canon guy. So I may not be able to help you with specific Nikon issues, but all camera issues are generally the same. The buttons are just in different places.

Doug, I don't think you need to be asking too many questions. Your photos are great!! Kelli wants to know where the roller coaster is. Your bird pics are really really good. Where's the rest? You know the ones that are not of the ts? shaggy

If it's the coaster I think you're talking about, then it's the Wildfire at Silver Dollar City.

Are you asking where the rest of my pictures are or where I took the pictures. I guess it would also help if I which set/album of photo's you're looking at. I have several albums on Webshots and a few on Photo.net

I never worry about the quality of the question. It's knowing that there's a question I need to ask. Right now, I'm still in the experimental stages with this new camera. Trial and error to see what captures I get from different setting and learning the limitations of what I have. Once I find the bounderies to what I can do, then I'll start finding questions on how to get what I'm not finding with my equipement or it's settings.

Eventually, I'll find things that just don't come out right or situations that I just can't capture with what I presntly own. Then, before spending a few hundred dollars (thousand $) on more equipement, I'll start asking why I'm not getting what I want.

Right now, the Nikon D40 field guide I purchased has helped quite a bit with suggestions. Taking the same compisition in different settings has helped with learing how a subject will come out. Just learning the different automatic settings and what they'll do will keep me busy for awhile. It's when I get to the manual functions that I'll start having more questions. I'm sure that when I decide to shoot RAW instead of JPEG, I'll have more questions. RIght now, JPEG is fine for what I'm doing.

You seem to be doing all the right things already Doug. Auto settings will produce acceptable results most of the time and that is obviously important. You are however obviously keen to take things beyond 'Auto' otherwise there is really little benefit in moving from compact to DSLR.
The huge benefit of digital is that experimenting doesn't cost money, just time and effort. If you are taking landscape photos aperture really is king as it effects how much of the image is in focus. In most situations landscapes don't move at great speed so shutter speed isn't such an issue

Keep shooting Doug. From what I see you have a good start. some pretty nice photos in there, keep it up!! As was already said the great thing about digital is is doesn't matter how many shots you take, just look them over and save just the ones you want. By taking lots of shots in lots of situations and going over them you will learn a lot about your camera.]
I shoot a Nikon also and will be glad to answer questions if I can.

Doug, are you talking about Silver Dollar City Branson? If so, that would be a real good excuse to go back

I love looking at your photos. I guess they are at Webshots then? I'm one of these people who love looking at pictures where others don't care at all. shaggy

If it's one of my Webshots albums, then the album should be labled as to where the photo was taken.

All for the roller coaster shots are from either Silver Dollar City or Celeberation City, both of which were in Branson. Celebration City closed at the end of last year and will not re-open. The coasters at Celebration City were smaller coasters and not very exciting. I'm pretty sure you're looking at the Wildfire Coaster at SCD, which is a pretty good ride.

That's the Photo.net page. If it's the coaster with the loops, it's the Wildfire. If it's the coaster a couple of picture past that (red roller coaster), that one was at Celebration City which has since closed down. All of the roller coaster photo's were taken with a point and shoot camera rather than a DSLR.

I had to look at my own signature to see what link I had in there. Sort of odd that I don't read my own posts I guess.
