  • When you travel with a laptop ...

Ok, so I haven't used a laptop since 1985, back when a laptop was either a Compaq or Osbourne luggable. Sheer weight and bulk deterred theft in those days. What about now?

Do you just leave it loose in the room? What kind of safety, anti-theft precautions should I take?

Now that I bought one, I'd like to keep it for a few more trips!

I normally call the resort first to be sure they have free WI FI in every room first. If they do have it then I plug it in and leave it in the room. No one can use my lap top unless they have my finger print. You need my finger print to get logged in to windows.

I have my laptop with me anytime I travel. I have an air card, so I am not concerned about wifi. My laptop is 3 years old, no security features, and really, no worry about leaving it in the room.

As I type this, from my laptop, on vacation, we are watching the waves on the ocean hitting the beach.

When I first started traveling with my laptop, I would put it away if I left the condo but not anymore. You feel right away if it is safe to leave it in the open or not at the resort you are but I would never leave it in front of a window where people can see if if they walk by.

I always turn the computer off when I leave the unit as someone would have to know the password to log in. I never use the Wi-Fi as the ones I have seen were not always secure. I am so addicted that I too have my own Verizon modem so can log on anywhere. Many people like reading a book while watching the scenery but I prefer the Internet.

Even though no week is a bad week for vacation, you're missing a warm week back home. The temps will be in the 60's for the next couple of days. Not to jinks anything, but it looks like spring has finally sprung here--the snows of last week are all but gone and the bitter temps are a fading memory--good riddens.

Some laptops have security slots. You can buy a cable that you can use to lock the laptop to a piece of furniture or railing or something else hard to move.

I bought a security cable but got tired of lugging it. If you want it BigRick, it's yours.

I used to hide my laptop when we left the room. Until I forgot it and left it behind a couch at a hotel in Pennsylvania several years ago... now I find it fits in some room safes.

I leave mine sitting on the table, not tied down or anything, hotels, timeshares, Aunt Peg's house, doesn't matter. It hasn't gone walking yet.

We've been traveling with a Laptop for several years now. At first, I tried the secure cable but, as above, I simply got tired of it and, didn't feel it was really that secure. For the most part I leave my laptop out and in the same place the entire trip. I take it everywhere as I use it to store my photographs.

I do not leave it easily visable from windows and, if there's a mid week cleaning, I put it out of sight either in my suitecase or in the safe. I've had someone with a pass key steal a digitial camara I'd lef out on the kitchen table. We were on the ground floor, the camera was visable from a window and an employee used their master key to open the door and help themselves. Fortunately, it was a camera on it's last legs that was producing a spot in the upper right hand corner of every photo. The reason it was even on the table was because I was out with a new camera. Still, lesson learned. Nothing within easy site if only to keep honest people honest.

Ya, rub it in. We have the same temperatures here, and rain.

On the plus side, I get to eat a lot of really good seafood, and I don't have to clean mud off the paws of a little white dog.

                        Frank,
What happens if you cut your finger will it still work?

I leave mine out usually on the table I use it on. I may shut it off from time to time, depending on how long we are leaving the unit. I only take it with me when I travel within the States and don't take it out of the country.

When I travel with it, I just put it out of sight. If there is a in room safe and it fits, I put it in there.

As my dad once told my step-mother when she asked him why he always locked his car in the small no crime town, "I want a ride home."

I want to have my laptop there when I return.
