  • Net Book?? Mini

Ok - so I know my way around a computer - but have no idea about anything when it comes to purchasing one. I was on Dell's site and saw what they call a NetBook - Mini Laptop.

I only use a laptop when I am away to access my work email and webbased applications that I use for work.

I don't store on it - play games - pics - video - anything like that. Purely only for use on the web to work.

Is a NetBook ok for this? I'm sure that question just seems to basic - but it is the only one I have!

A netbook should be perfect for you. The idea with the netbook is that it strips it down to just a basic PC that's useful for the minimum requirements: e-mail, web, and some simple word processing. Ultra-portable, and simple.

    Regards,

      Netbooks are great.

Love my Acer netbook. Got it at Walmart for $299. Works great on vacations for email and using Skype. Wi-fi and a camera and microphone built in. No CD/DVD just USB ports but enough for me. And best of all it fits in my purse. Now I can check my ebay and enjoy Disney at the same time.

        That's what iPhones are for!

Yes Steve that is if you want to pay $30 a month to At&T for 3G. No thanks I'll keep my Palm Centro with Sprint. Plus I like getting free internet on my vacations and not using that small screen on the iphone. I'm still not an apple lover yet. Maybe one day.

I had a Palm Treo with AT&T, and I found the Edge network to be just unusable for data; it was fine as a PDA and phone until the bluetooth went out (and then it wouldn't connect to my laptop, car, or headset any longer). I never tried Sprint's network to compare. I've had one Palm product or another since the original Palm Pilot came out, and this March was the first time I moved to something else.

And although I have an iPhone, I was joking; when we went to St. Lucia, I turned off all data roaming and just had it as an emergency phone (I didn't use it). I did use Skype from the resort (Windjammer Landing has in-room 100 BaseT), and that worked well with my laptop. I use a Mac now, but for years I ran Linux on PC laptops, quite happily. I only use Windows when the folks at work threaten me with the red-hot irons

And, back to the original point, a Netbook will run either Linux or Windows XP (and soon, I believe, Windows 7) quite happily.

I have XP on mine and just love it for travel. I teach an on-line class and it works well for me.

Steve you are very funny. I just love IT people. They are always going against the norm. I'm just a regular technophobe so I know nothing about anything but Windows and Palm (I know it's a dying program but I still like my palms). Actually I can barely get my computer to work right half the time. At least I can read these forums in between crashing.

I've got a Lenovo S10 - I love it. Question for you techies - I'm traveling to France and I have a regular converter/adapter, do I need a special converter for the netbook?
