Why is it that on a PC some sites I have been on get saved in the drop-down menu on the address line and some do not?

You obviously have a part-time computer. Seriously, what is being saved and what is not ? You may have something in your history settings which prohibits saving some sites for the drop down.

I haven't nolticed any pattern in what's being saved and what's not. What's not, that I want, I have been putting in favorites.

      I'll look closer.

I took a quick look at my IE browser(guessing that it's what you use) and noticed that https sites are not saved in the drop down menu.

URL's you type into the address bar will be saved (til you clear them - if your settings save).

But those for which you click on a link, won't be saved.

So if you want to save a site that way, for quick revisit, type it in once. At least that's how my PC's work.
