Worldmark Discovery Bay is located on the north west side of Discovery Bay. The rooms have great views of the bay with some rooms built right on the water. This is a very scenic area and a very nice resort.
This resort is a really great facility for heading off salmon on their migration to Puget Sound tributaries. The resort has a guest dock to tie up your boat. It is a 20 minute run by boat to the Salish Sea and Protection Island. If the weather is good and the sea is good I like to troll about a mile north east of Protection Island with a depth of 50 ft or more. If the weather is rough I stay in-between Protection Island and Discovery Bay is the deeper channel that marks out from 30 ft to 50 ft heading east towards Wilson Point.
Do not fish near Protection Island because of all of the seals. The scent of seal is a salmon turn off, imo. If you hook up, a seal will likely steal your catch. However, if you see seals way out in the Salish Sea it could be they are chasing salmon so it might be a good thing. In odd numbered years this area is schooling with Pink Salmon. Trolling spoons with a flasher is a good way to catch pinks.
In Discovery Bay near the resort, its not the best fishing most times of the year, especially summer. We did bottom fish with bait and caught a few flounder. You need to find sandy bottom or the crabs will steal your bait. We used clam necks for bait.
However, the crabbing is excellent. Huge Dungeness crabs and decent sized rock crabs are easy to catch. Many people crab fish off the dock at the resort. In August the squid school up around the dock. Its pretty easy to catch these as well. Kids love to squid. My grandkids were filling up 5 gallon buckets. Claming is good in the area but you need to check to see if it is open. One special tasty type of clam that can be caught on a low tide called a geoduck. You will be digging and digging but if you get one it is a very tasty treat. Beards of muscles can be found dangling off docks and buoys.
The closet place to buy gear is at the north end of the bay. Port Townsend is about 15 minutes east of the resort and Sequim is about 20 minutes west of the resort. Both towns have bait, beer and bbq supplies.
