I have a video clip with audio from Merry Clayton. Merry was the backup singer for Mick on this 1969 hit. I am sure you all have heard this song dozens of times if not hundreds over the years.
I have discovered that in her vocals of this hit her voice actually cracks while she is belting out the lyrics " Rape, Murder its just a shot away" . Despite having heard this song over the years I have never realized that there was this slight defect in this song, and yet it was cut and released as is in only 2 takes.
In this video the Merry's voice track is striped out of the surrounding music to reveal what I would say is her 'screaming' voice. It is absolutely amazing to think that this slight defect was woven into the background to make this marvelous hit recording. It is something I never detected, and would not have if not for the vocal track in the video.
I have also listened to the song at least 4 times now with the other supporting tracks and can now hear the defect.
Take listen and let me know what you all think?
