  • Anyone here have carpeting in your finished basement? If so, what color?

We have light colored (cream with colored flecks) berber, wall-to-wall carpeting in our basement which has to be replaced because our boiler leaked. I'm thinking of going with a darker color this time. The cream gets dirty really quickly, especially with people walking in from the garage. Any suggestions? No real color scheme to follow...there is a bathroom down there but it has grey walls and white and blue tiles (and a navy shower curtain), so pretty basic.

    Thanks for any input!

Mine is a teal, sort of industrial. The walls are eggshell so the whole place is rather BORING! I'm not going to replace it any time soon, though, because it is such a large area it will cost a fortune. We don't get much traffic in our basement. When we had it finished, I envisioned the kids playing down there and the house staying neat up above. Never happened!

I have what is similar in color to what you have but my set up is different - we enter the basement from a door in the kitchen and people (Those Kids and Their Friends) already have their shoes off so the carpet looks new.

Because of the garage entry, have you considered some other floor covering ? I'm thinking some kind of linoleum or something washable -?
      I know it's not warm, but ...

If the area has a lot of traffic, go with a commercial carpet...They have more variety than residential carpet has for a basement. Do you have pets, do people sit down there a lot?
Naturally, lighter carpet will show more dirt. I've seen a variety of carpets in all different colors that don't show dirt. There are some speckled colors when you look at them close, but at any distance have an overall blue, red, etc.
I had a very rich burgundy with off-white dots that never showed dirt. And it was where people came in from outside..., wiped their feet on a small piece of carpet in a foyer area at the front door and came in the house with their shoes
The room had all kinds of traffic, kids, friends, family, dogs...We just changed it to hard wood and had it for 10 years.

I have about 450 sq ft of berber in my basement, it's a mid range grey and white with black/dary grey flecks. I put a top underlay beneath it and it's been down 8 yrs and is in really good condition. You have to walk over it to get to the laundry room and I have a 46 inch TV down there so it's had lots of traffic.

Ours is grey with a pattern I would have to look at to describe. It seems to hide being dirty quite well. Now that I'm reminded, I should go vacuum it soon.

              Basment Floor

We have Knotty Pine wood on the walls, The carpeting is a blue commercial quality. Is time to clean the carpet also.

I'm about to put down tealish carpet tiles with flecks of purple and pink. Overall effect boring. But I wanted carpet tiles because of the dangers of the sump pumps breaking down or the hot-water heating leaking or people just tracking stuff in or the probability of us beating a path from the bottom of the stairs to the laundry room. The carpet tiles aren't beautiful, but you can lift them up and wash them in the sink or just toss them and replace them with extras.

We also have carpet tiles in the basement rec room. We love them. They are sort of tweedy grey with flecks. Stands up very well.

Reading this I sure miss not having a basement. I grew up having one in Wisconsin where it was the norm. The hours spent down their playing, watching TV; oh yeah, sitting in complete darkness as the tornado warning sirens blew. Ok, all the memories aren't good ones.
