Our weather is unreal

This is our second warning on the phone for a tornedo or water spouts and for flooding too.

We can pick up sand bags to protect our property as the streets can not handle all the water. We had to drive a lot today in heavy rains and the streets in Long Beach were more like rivers. At some places, the water was at least a foot deep but everyone was driving slow and very carefully so we didn't see any accidents. On top of that the winds were high and there was some thunder in the distance but it is calm and dry right now. In other words, very strange weather.

We are expecting a third but heavier storm yet. We certainly needed that rain but not all at once.

When we were driving in Long Beach this afternoon, we were listening to the local news and San Pedro really had it bad with deep water on the roads as you can see here and some people had to be rescued out of their homes.

It will also affect the areas where we had fires not too long ago. People there will have to evacuate again. It always happens that way.

Orange County Tornado: Strong Storm, Rare Twister Strike Los Angeles, California (VIDEO)

A rare Orange County tornado officially touched down today in California, just outside Los Angeles, according to the National Weather Service, along with four water spouts and winds of up to 80 mph.

I have seen water spouts before but the tornedo must have been over the city. We also saw a trash can in the middle of an intersecton today and the water was deep but not as deep as what is shown in San Pedro.

It is very unusual, Shaggy. We are expecting some very high waves tomorrow or Thursday. They may be as high as 25 feet.

We spent last weekend visiting with DD and SIL, who live in Kensington, CA, near the top of the Berkeley HIlls. On Monday morning we had the stormiest I have ever experienced in the San Francisco area. (We lived in the Bay Area for 17 years of our marriage, and DW was raised in Redwood City, so I think I have a reasonable frame of reference.)

The Aleutian Islands are well-known for "horizontal rain". That's what this was. The rain was pelting the house directly from the side. The street in front of their house is about a 20% grade, and the water was running down the street about 1/2" deep. I think that perhaps only people who have worked with drainage and runoff can appreciate what it means to have a 20% slope with 1/2-inch deep sheet flow. The edges of the road, along the curb, were running close about one foot deep.

It was the hardest rain I've even seen in a non-mountain, non-desert area in the Western US.

This weather is causing a lot more good than harm. Don't forget that we badly need the rain and snow due to the drought of the last few years. I saw on the news last night, that despite the current rain, Los Angeles needs 13-16" more to overcome the drought. Fortunately we still have February and March to go which are typically our 2 wettest months of the year.

So far this is nothing compared to past years. I remember a few years ago when it rained almost every day during February. Does anybody remember the San Diego River flooding in the mid 80's?

I feel sorry for people suffering hardships but earthquakes, fires, flooding and mudslides are all part of living in California. Despite this, I would never consider living anywhere else.

I thought I heard on the news that the storms in southern California have accounted for 4 deaths. Two (if I remember correctly) were from falling trees. I can't remember what the other two were from.
