  • HOLY MOLY! NY Driver's License renewal fees

Got a letter in the mail today from the Dept Motor Vehicles NYS. I'm due for renewal this year. They want ~ $80 for 8 years. When you consider per anum not horrific but for some odd reason I wasn't expecting that large a fee. Granted it's been 10 years since I had to renew but I'm pretty sure it was $5/year back then.

    What are you all paying?

Not only does that sound great but your only talking $10.00 a year and not renewing for eight years is unblievable.

Here in California you only get five year or if ticket it is from three to four years. At that point you might need to go to DMV and retest. I would pay that $80 in a heart beat just to know I had eight years and didn't need to go to a office and waste a hour or more.

        I forget.

Looked at the license though and it is good until 2012.

Think it was $40-50 ish and likely good for 5 yrs.

My license actually expired on the 25th of January......I'm late, but going this week to get it renewed. Figures that the fee would be high. What's new with that?

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

Driver’s licence issue or renewal per year is $27 (AUD)
(1 to 10 year licences available ) plus an administration fee of $15.00 (AUD).

My licence is due to be renewed next year and at todays prices will cost the equivalent of $253 USD for a 10 year licence.

In California the license is good for 5 years and is $31. If you have a clean driving record, no suspensions or probations, no court failure-to-appear, and are under 70 years old, you may renew-by-mail two consecutive times. So, keep a clean driving record and don't grow to old and mail in your renewal.

Make an appointment and you "shouldn't have that hour wait.

If you had no tickets, you can renew by mail or on-line for 2 renewal periods so you actually get 15 years without having to go to the DMV office if you are a good driver.

Michigan is $18 for four years ($25 if you let it expire first). You can renew once by mail, but have to physically go in the next time.

To tell you the truth, I was shocked at how cheap it was.

Mine is not due until March, so I will let you know.
After moving to FL from WNY, I found it very amusing (and very nice actually) that I have been able to keep the same DL photo since I moved here in 1994... perpetually younger... I love that!!

I'm always homesick. However at that price I could be in recovery,

                      Thanks for the thought.
