  • Setting yourself up to be robbed

Yesterday I noticed two of my friends on two different networking sites posted information in public places that I didn't think should have been public. One was a home phone number for a very attractive single mother. She posted it so recruiters could easily contact her. I let her know that I thought it was not the safest thing to do because her phone number would lead to her address and who knows what kook may be looking at her picture and profile.

The other was someone who just set their wedding plans. He posted the date and location. I warned him that people look for these sorts of announcements in papers and come to the house when they know the people will not be there. Weddings, funerals, etc. I think he thought I was nuts, but he did a little research and came up with this interesting site.

Sue, I think you're being very helpful to warn your friends....I too feel that many folks are unwittingly exposing themselves to unnecessary risks thru some of the internet. I hope that they understand that you were trying to look out for them.
Life is short, live it with this awareness.

Both actually did thank me for making them aware of this potential threat. I notice people here saying they'll be gone on such and such a date. With enough work, I'm sure that many of us can be tracked and our home addresses discovered for those with evil intent.

Another way to Set yourself up to be robbed!

There is another way thieves can rob your house that a lot of people don't think about. They can break into your car and steal your GPS at the mall or a restaurant or at a wedding or funeral. All they have to do is push "HOME" and they have the directions to your house when you obviously are not there.

So set your GPS Home to something else besides your home address. Also, I use a Garmin beanbag mount for my Garmin GPS so I can remove the GPS, mount, and cable from the car when I am not in it. Those window mounts are an open invitation to "rob me".
