  • Woodstoves (or similar) - Do You Use ?

Got to thinking if any fellow TS4Mers used Wood, pellets or other to heat their houses.

I have an older Jotual #3 woodstove in my home outside of Boston and a Jotul Castine in the Quechee, Vt. house.

They have been great keeping the chill off during those brutal cold snaps and power outages.

I buy a cord of wood and split with my neighbor.

    Jotul 3: http://www.jotul.us/en/wwwjotulus/Ma.../Jotul-F-3-CB/ I've had my for 24 years. It's black.

We have a fireplace insert. However, we are now prevented on "Save the Air" days from having a fire in the fireplace. And of course, we had them on several of the days it really would have been nice to have one.

We put in a used Delude Stove the year after we bought the house ~ 1978. A year or two when the kids were young, we burned wood full time. We couldn't afford the oil, and pallets were free. This year we've used the stove a lot, and only used oil as a backup ~ let it take over at night. We're still on our first tankl!! Think we got our moneys worth ~ and then some!!

We have a stand-alone gas stove that we really like. In our previous house we had a wood-burning stove.

I've got a stove in the basement. I heated the house with it for many years, but the past three years has only seen one fire. I keep it ready to go in case of a winter power outage. Burning wood is a lot of work---someone once stated that wood has to be moved an average of six times before it gets in the stove.

Used a woodstove/burned wood for years and yes it saves on oil or gas but now I am sick of the dust it creates. Had an Earth Stove once and now have a Vermont Castings in this house.

The wood stove is our primary source of heat. It's a pita. Cords of wood are not cheap anymore so sometimes I wonder if we are really saving any money. My son does get access to free fallen trees periodically but then he has to cut and split the wood. We have to stack it outside, then bring it in the house, make sure the fire doesn't go out, empty the ashes, clean the chimney and it's dusty and messy. That said, the heat from the stove always feel so much warmer and cozy than the electric heat.

have one, love it. fuel falls free in the yard. lots of work, worth it for us. husband really doesn't do crap with it, for it. This is teh first year I bought "easy logs", the stuff you get in the Lowes or supermarket where you just stick em in and light em, about 4 hours of fire. Did that when I was goign to be out of town with single digit temps so he could use it without having to do any work (sheesh).

they are convenient, but expensive, and I'm not sure I'm ok with the chemicals they are treated with. I like building fires.

It's old, used to heat the entire house long before we showed up. It is now in a room between 2 doors to the outside so we don't get those nasty chilly "blow ins" (with a dog, doors open more frequently). It also has kept the furnace on that side of the house from having to run as much. Bedroom is all the way at teh other end, so that zone does run regardless of wood stove operation.

I have a Viking wood stove, and really enjoy it. It is not our primary source of heat (we use a gas-fired furnace) but it really takes the chill off on those winter days.
