  • Netflix or Blockbuster?

Our local Movie Gallery is closing Now I must chose between these two. We do have a Blockbuster store, but guess it's time to use the 'mail' to get my DVD's. DD#1 has tried both and says she has to wait forever for a new release from either one. That makes me unhappy. I've been used to going to MG on Tuesdays and picking up the newest releases (OK, so I'm spoiled). What is the good and bad on Netflix and Blockbusters? TIA

Our Blockbuster closed. We've been using Netflix and we've had good luck with it. But our latest find was the "Redbox" in a number of our grocery stores. They charge $1 per night. Easy to get a movie and easy to return. Some of the stores have the boxes inside, which limits your access to store hours, but at least one store has the box outside. You can rent from one location and return at another, too.

I like my netflix. We always find plenty of movies available as DVD and do find some good movies to view 'on demand' on my computer which I hook up to a projector. Those who are more up to date can stream to their tv set, my tv won't accept anytype of signal like that.

As far as not having a movie right at the DVD release, that doesn't bother me. If I really needed to see it right away, I could have gone to the theater. I do wish more movies would be on demand, but still we are doing fine with our movies.

I just signed up with netflix last month. It is especially useful because, as vintner mentions, they do unlimited on-demand streaming to a variety of devices, including our Wii. The streaming catalog is much smaller than the DVD catalog, but there is still an effectively infinite set of choices.

We live right by a blockbuster, so we return to the store and it makes sense for us, if we were not this close, I think Netflix is the better mail only service.

I've used them both. Right now I have Blockbuster. I don't really see much of a difference between them, but I don't use streaming features, so if you want to use that, I'm thinking Netflix is probably the preferred one. However, if you like to rent BluRay dvds then Blockbuster has the edge as they don't charge extra for them.

Occasionally I have to wait awhile for the latest releases, but usually I don't have too much trouble getting the new titles.

My local blockbuster (now closed) tried to tell me twice that I was late turning movies in. Both times were overnight transactions - how I could be late turning something in the next day on a 3 day rental I still don't know. They even threatened me with collections if I didn't pay their late fee (I didn't and they didn't).

So, my answer is Netflix. Never late. Takes 3 days from the day I return until the day I have the next batch. Plus they stream to my tivo(s). Netflix.

The rumor is that Blockbuster is going to go under soon...although I've been hearing that for years, and my local store is still puttering along.

We prefer Netflix after doing both. We have discovered if we mail our movies back on Saturday we always get the new movies. We mail on Saturday and new releases arrive on Tuesday.

We also use a ROKU player to download movies. We took it to Hawaii with us and with the free wireless in the room we were able to watch movies in our timeshare.

Ooohhh really? We usually take our netflix movies with us and then drop them in a mailbox. We have a Roku player now too. We should take it with us...but then my DH would probably lose his mind when the kids and I watch The Office over and over...just like at home..ok nixing that idea-it's his vacation too!

I've had Netflix for years now and am very happy with it. They have a distribution office in Ft. Laud about 30 miles from me so I get the movies in record time.

I also bought a Roku device and love it. I paid $99 for it and you get unlimited instant movies. Most of them are more than a year or two old but it still gives you nice options as I'm always behind on my movies.

Roku is adding channels that are pay per view. Haven't tried them yet but if you must see a movie the day it hits the airwaves then you might enjoy this part of Roku.

There is also Amazon movie rentals that are on the ROKU. Mucher new releases than what comes with Netflix. You do pay for them but at $3 or less not a bad option for newer stuff. Wife watched some new ones and enjoyed the heck out of it.

There are a lot of different channels available on the ROKU.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE REDBOX! Did you know you can go online and reserve your movie and then go pick it up at your convenience. No more standing at the box and looking for the movie you want. You can just peruse the titles on your computer and reserve what you want. They don't get the newest movies right away because of some contract problem, but it is still so convenient AND CHEAP!
I do like blockbuster for some of the TV shows, etc. Redbox only has movies.
