Pat had lived in Key West for 31 years and moved in with us 2 years ago when DH totaled the truck, because she felt we really needed the help around the house/grounds. Since then she has had various part time, seasonal jobs. But a week ago or so a friend of hers called and offered her a job and we said 'take it...the money is too good to pass up.' We will be fine.
Her friend, whom she has worked with, fished with, is a Capt. on a ship(Virginia Responder) out of Virginia that was called to do clean up in the Gulf. He said they needed cooks and so far they have been the cooks from...well, you know where. She applied and was hired in a couple of days.
She left yesterday from RSW to New Orleans. Called this morning on her way out to sea to meet up with the ship. She did take her camera.
As background info on Pat...she has a BA in Fine Art, moved to KW right after college and worked various jobs, but fell in love with the sea and had worked on boats/ships most of that time, many of them research vessels. She has a captains license for a 200 T ship, is an able bodied seaman, deck hand, cook and a certificate for HazMat materials and I don't know what else.
The money will be good and she will work 2 weeks, be home 2 weeks and "they" will pay all expenses, and that includes flying her back and forth..,or if we have an emergency..they'll get her home ASAP.
There are 2 cooks for about 20-25 crew (she has cooked alone for crews of up to 30-35) and they'll share cooking and ordering. She will be the head cook because of all her experience.
Pat was never afraid to try about anything.
