I'm moving from PA to SC and taking only a small amount of furniture. I looked at UHaul and it's over $1000. Doesn't matter if it's 1 way or round trip. I got some estimates from movers and they have minimum weights of either 1000 or 2000 lbs. The lowest quote I have is $1300. Any ideas on getting something more reasonable?

When my husband and I combined households and he moved just a little stuff from California, he discovered there are big moving van type trucks that haul commercial stuff across country, and you can put your stuff in their trucks and they'll charge you for only the space your stuff takes up; the one he used was ABF. It was really inexpensive. They have now refined the system much more than they had when he moved because they had just started doing it then. http://www.upack.com/"You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity." Wow - I'm surprised it's so expensive! Maybe trying calling around to some of the NC furniture places that are used to shipping all over the country and find out who they use? I'm thinking you might find a truck delivering up north that would give you a deal on the return trip. Maybe a long shot, but ya never know...
Would the stuff fit in a pickup truck? That rental might cost less.

When DOD moved cross country he hired a van line that charged by the pound. He had to wait until they had a full shipment going from here to there but it wasn't a long wait.
I don't recall it being very expensive. I'll ask when we next speak who he used.Lawren

You might try Budget, Ryder and/or Enterprise Commerical. I think there are some firms that you get a large container and pack it yourself and then they deliver it and you unload. Not sure of the name and if there is a minimum weight or volume you have to meet.

If you have really just a few things...did you know that Greyhound has a shipping service for big packages? Supposed to be quite inexpensive.
