  • Bought my Poppy today

Today I stopped at the supermarket on my way home and saw an old veteran out front with his VFW Buddy Poppies. I always get nostalgic about these poppies because my grandfather used to sell them. Then he used to get dressed up in his American Legion uniform and march in the Memorial Day parade. As I was making my donation, I mentioned my grandfather to the gentleman. He asked "World War II?" and I told him yes, and that my father in law was a WWII vet also. He said there are hardly any WWII vets alive anymore. And I guess since it was 65 years ago, it's no wonder. He told me he was serving in the Phillipines during the war, but that he had the chance to visit Pearl Harbor many years after. Then he choked up and said, "and look, we still have war". I thanked him for his service, and left him with tears in my eyes. This man was almost 90 years old, standing out this hot day, selling poppies to help fellow vets.
Remember our Veterans this Memorial Day.

We bought one yesterday from a veteran in front of our local supermarket. Our poppy's sponsoring strip was "Jewish VFW." Obviously started up around the end of WW II. Another sad chapter of history many are not aware of.
