Golden Girls Star Rue McClanahan Dead at 76

McClanahan suffered a massive stroke and died early Thursday morning, according to People. Her death makes Betty White last surviving member of the famed TV quartet.
McClanahan is best known for playing Blanche Deveraux during Golden Girls‘ seven-year run. Her death follows some recent health problems, including a triple-bypass surgery and a minor stroke suffered in January.
Golden Girls‘ co-star Beatrice Arthur died last year; Estelle Getty passed away in 2008. White, 88, recently hosted Saturday Night Live and is enjoying a late-life resurgence, powered in part by legions of Internet fans.

How sad. I loved Golden Girls when it aired and now that I'm in that age category, I enjoy the reruns even more. She sure played a funny Blanche. I'm sorry I never got to see her in Wicked on Broadway.

My son and his wife, and I occassionally watch reruns. It makes us feel connected, as we used to watch it regularly with my mom (who passed 6/94).
      It brings back good memories.

I guess that completes the latest trifecta: Gary Coleman, Dennis Hopper and Rue McClanahan.

You forgot Art Linkletter. Hope it's not the start of another 3.

I loved her in the role of Blanche. We still watch reruns of the Golden Girls. The story lines and plots were so good. My DH said he read somewhere that Betty White was originally supposed to be cast as Blanche. Glad the producers chenged their minds. The mix of personalities on the show was charming and funny. RIP Rue - You will forever be in our hearts as the fun-loving, sexy Blanche.

I also read that and actually heard Betty White say so recently.
