It's prom season, horrified at the cost of tuxedo rentals!
Though I suppose things could be worse, I could be Irene...
The costs are indeed outrageous. I'm not sure if there was a cost for the prom tickets, I will find out.
I wanted to get my hair done (nothing fancy, just the usual monthly maintenance) for "pre-prom," but I had to get it done in the city before heading home because there were no appointments near me - all the girls going to prom had them booked.
I am sure the girls ended up spending a good deal more than the boys, at least on their costumes.
The limo costs are outrageous! I believe my son's share was $200 pp and he paid for his date also! Of course they HAD to have the biggest, best, fanciest. If they could only know now what they will know when they are our ages ...sigh...

I guess we got a bargain - DS' group rented a "party bus" that seats more people, so the cost for him and his date together was a bargain at $225.
I probably shouldn't have started this thread, I'm getting aggravated all over again
DS school doesn't allow the kids to drive themselves to Prom. They use charter buses. Prom was held in Bel-Air.
Ticket costs were discounted from about 120.00 originally to something like 85.00 because the ASB sold "energy drinks" all year long to help defray costs(don't get me started on that one. They took soda out of the schools and yet the kids can sell Monsters)
So a prom ticket included transportation, dinner, and the dancing.
We bought a corsage for the date that lasted about 30 mins in to the Prom ( the girl NOT the corsage-I'm sure that held up just fine) and did pictures at home.
Total cost about 185.00.
Don't fret though-I also have a daughter-I'll get mine soon enough

So sensible. I'll bet that even with your daughter, it'll end up more reasonable than most.
Our district is mindbogglingly stupid with respect to its prom policies, but I'll not get into that here.
Our junior prom has a no limo policy. Everyone meets up at the school and takes buses to the proms. I think it's a sound policy since most of the kids are just 16.

Our junior prom has the same policy, but the kids have the limos wait somewhere other than at school and then go into the city after
I got married last weekend, and my father in law rented a tux, shirt, tie and shoes for $75 in Gatlinburg TN. I bought my husband a tux, a shirt and a tie for $205. We figure that he'll use the tux again if we go on a cruise or to a formal affair. The shirt was a regular shirt that he can wear to work, so it was a practical choice.
When my daughter went to the prom in 2002, I bought the dress for $175, and she had to buy everything else. She was very thrifty...seeing that a fancy makeup bag looked like an evening bag, but was 1/4 the price.
When my son went to his senior prom, I bought him a regular suit, made his boutinear (sp?) and his dates wrist corsage, and he was very happy. He said that most of the guys quickly took off their coats, and then you really couldn't tell he was any different than the rest of them.
