  • It's prom season, horrified at the cost of tuxedo rentals!

So I figured I would take an informal survey.. for those of you renting tuxes this season for your seniors, how much does it cost? DS' rental, including shoes, comes to $195.

Good grief! At that rate, I might look at buying one and telling him not to grow any more.

Wow, I thought a tuxedo rental was always $100.

If I remember correctly, mine was $35.00 for my senior prom in 1965.

In an inflation calculator on the internet, it gave me the following:

What cost $35 in 1965 would cost $235.51 in 2009.

Ours was $125 without the shoes.

          Shoes are a good investment....

For my prom in 1970, my date rented his tux for $35. Considering I made $1.60 an hour in those days, $195 sounds like it's in the same ball park or maybe even less if you look at real dollars that kids are earning. I think my dress was also about $35 and I'm sure the girls are wearing dresses that cost about what the tux is renting for.

I think in 1980 for our wedding, DH paid $55. Because he was the groom, they threw the shoes in free for him. It was a beauty - dark brown with huge brown velvet lapels, a ruffled shirt and bow tie. Hunky!!

My son bought his tuxedo for prom, at Syms......They were selling them for slightly more than it cost to rent them. It was a decent tuxedo, as I recall.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

Tuxedos sound cheap in comparison to the girls' dresses. Several around here are spending $400 or more just for the dress!!! Add in the up-do hairstyle at $75+ tip, shoes, purse, pictures and you are looking at close to $750. That's assuming that the date is paying for dinner and the limo. I think it is totally outrageous.

I don't remember how much we have paid! I would guess this is the one big time of the year for this business so they need to make a killing.

Rest of the year it must be very slow because most rentals would only be for weddings or deaths.

The last one for me was our vacation cruise where you have the one big night of dinner and dancing and pictures.

It's shocking, isn't it? DH is a HS teacher and he says some kids work at part-time jobs all year just so they can afford the prom. It gets up into the thousands of dollars, with the tickets, clothing, flowers, limos....

Dan's (last year) tux rental was $165, then of course the cost of the prom tickets @ $100 a piece (or a little more) and their share of the limo. All in all, Outrageous.

And the week before we had the female side of the expenses - Jule went with her BF to his senior prom , so we had dress shoes bag (IMO we got away cheap, I felt so good ) & updo (outrageous especially since she took it out as soon as she got home)

Another hosing is the senior picture ( I really just wanted ONE picture and no package was less than $120 -- I felt I could have taken as good a picture) and yearbook (about the same amount.) plus costs for cap and gown and a tassle plus one for the car - ($65?)

                              Costs too much to 'graduate'.
