  • I squished my tomato

This is the 2nd time I've tried to grow tomatoes. I got my first one off the vine a few days ago and was so proud. My 2nd one was finally ready today and laid it down on the gound while I was watering my flowers and Mater (my dog) She loves to bite the water and begs to get wet. Well, wouldn't you know it, I stepped the wrong way and squish, there it went.
    Instant tomato juice. '

This little story really has nothing to do with the price of tea in China, but with all the bad stuff going around I thought we could use a laugh. shaggy

Tha'ts funny!! Yep, I'd be right in the middle of it!! shaggy

Tomato care? What's that? I planted it in my flower garden, kept it watered , watched it grow, waited (and waited) for it to turn ripe, picked it, ate a BLT, picked another one, squished it, and am now waiting for 2 more to get bigger and turn ripe.

Hi Shaggy - We are on opposite ends of the tomato growing spectrum! I love tomatoes and get carried overboard. Last year I planted 17 plants and ate tomatoes on a daily basis and brought a bag to work with me every day.

This year - NADA. No plants at all. DH said he was sick of tomatoes.

Hey, on second thought, your way is better. You can build up some anticipation for the next succulent bite of that juicy, ripe tomato.

              Happy gardening!

Man, you have it easy Shaggy. In FL you have to fight off all the little critters and there are lots of them trying to eat your tomatoes right on the vine before you even get a chance to squish them. Gardening sounds so much easier in North Carolina.

NEVER PICK ONE AND SET IT DOWN in the WATERING DANCE area!

Now, if you had 17 plants, you might care less.

btw, where is my BLT? yumm

BLTs is the first thing for my picked tomatoes (which are not there yet). I also have my cherry tomatoes so I can have tomatoes earlier, and I am popping those in my mouth daily right now. Mmmmm poppers.

You have to watch the water dance. They will kill tomatoes every time.

17 plants is NOT overboard. We plant over 100 of various varieties every year. This year, DH put a truckload of mushroom compost on the garden and they really did great. Unfortunately, we were on vacation for three weeks and missed the early ones. DD is home for the summer and kept sending us pictures of the crop. She ate all she could, froze a few, and gave a lot of them away. Since we were up north where tomatoes were $4.30 a pound, I was very anxious to get home to them. I've had at least a couple every day since we got back. I hope they're going to last until frost this year if we keep them watered. The typical summer droughts usually kill them by now.
