  • Amtrak BWI to WAS

I am due to arrive at BWI at 9:05 am on Sunday, and have to catch an Amtrak train to Union Station, WAS. The next train leaves at 9:35. I am not familiar with the logistics of getting from the airport to the train station. Is 1/2 enough? Any input would be appreciated. Thank you.

I haven't done it in years, but no, I don't think half an hour is enough time to get from BWI to the train station in Baltimore.

But don't the Amtrak trains to Washington run pretty frequently? Are you trying to make some other connection in Washington?

They also have commuter trains from Baltimore to Washington. I can ask my friend who used to live in Baltimore and commute to Washington--there's a light rail or something.

Jacki, I found this article about it. I was thinking of the MARC trains. They seem to go straight from BWI to Washington. Would that help?

I don't think Marc runs on weekends. I would think 1/2 hour would really be cutting it close.

ps. I live in DC area, but on Virginia side, so not real familiar with BWI to Amtrak.

Thank you both. My research shows that the MARC trains don't run on weekends, so it is the Amtrak for me. I don't have to make a connection; but I would have to wait over an hour for the next train, so I was hoping to make the earlier one.

            That article says...

If you arrive on a weekend and cannot take the MARC train, take Amtrak. Service from the BWI Rail Station starts at 6:23 a.m. and ends at 11:48 p.m. weekdays and 11:51 p.m. weekends. The trip is 30 minutes to Union Station. From $12 each way.

            ---------------------------
Is there Amtrak service direct from the BWI rail station to Union Station, Washington?

Or how about an airport bus? Not the city bus that the article talks about, but a bus that takes travelers from the airport to the city, like at the NYC airports?

Amtrak (and Marc) are direct from BWI to Washington or Baltimore, etc. Not all Amtrak trains stop at BWI,

              Nancy

ps. Train station is not in Airport.

Yes, the Amtrak takes you from the BWI station (serviced via shuttle bus from the airport) to Union Station. The fare for the time I need is $13. Not bad.
I am actually heading to Arlington, so I'll grab a metro from Union Station.

So now I'm confused. Is the question whether you can make it off the plane and onto the Amtrak train at the BWI train station in 30 minutes? Is that the 9:35 train you're aiming for? Are you checking your bags?

                    Jacki,

You might want to look into Supershuttle. Not used it at BWI, but believe it is there, but used it in Tampa. Might be almost as cheap as Amtrak to Metro.

                    Just an idea.

I never heard of that. I checked - it is $46 to the hotel. A possibility.

Yes, that was my question. It's the 9:35 train vs. the 10:53. I am just staying one night so bringing a carry on. I booked the 10:53, but if I get to the depot in time I'll hop aboard the 9:35.
Thank you all for your help, and to Marti who e-mailed me and told me where to pick up the shuttle to the depot.

Now I get it! I was thinking you were trying to get to the main Baltimore train station in thirty minutes, which seemed pretty unlikely....

Do you directions for the metro once you get to Union Station? That I can help you with. Just tell me exactly where the hotel is located.

Thanks Nancy. The hotel has a shuttle from Arlington Pentagon Station. I figured I can get the metro to there from Union Station?
