  • Medical procedures in Mexico?

    This is the situation:

My sister has a pre-cancerous condition which requires a hysterectomy eventually. It is not critical that the hysterectomy be performed immediately. She does not have insurance. Her husband is unemployed and has been for long enough that his COBRA has run out.

If done in the US, the procedure would be done with the Davinci robot procedure (a laparascopic procedure). She is extremely overweight and the robotic procedure is easier for the doctor to perform.

First, has anyone had medical procedures done in Mexico for similar reasons?

Can you think of other options?

I have not had a hysterectomy in Mexico but have had too many procedures to list.
I did have a laproscopic gallbladder removal, a full hip replacement, bilateral mastectomy, skin sparring with expanders placed, to name a few. All my procedures were done in Guadalajara Mexico. I have a wonderful Cancer, Oncology and surgeon. I do go to a great private hospital, not as cheap as many others.

I do not know of any other options for you, medical care is substantially cheaper here than in US. Research, research you doctor and hospital though.

    Best of luck!!!

I have heard that there is an excellent medical school in Guadalajara. Is the hospital that you go to associated with the medical school?

Yes there is an excellent med school in Guad. I have no clue though whether my hospital is affialiated with it as hard to decifer some things or ways of doing things here. I know they do take interns and residents etc, so maybe. The hospital I use most is Hospital Angeles del Carmen, and I also use Puerto Hierro, both in Guad. and both private hospitals. San Javier and Americas are also two good private hospitals in Guad.

Hospital de las Angeles in Tijuana is an excellent hospital with excellent doctors. I know several people who have had complicated surgery there. The equipment is better than many hospitals in the U.S.

You are more than welcome elaine.....I am in process of getting referral for a new GYN from my medical team of doctors as I want all of them, the doctors to be tied together , as breast cancer frequently recurs in ovaries or uterus. I am not fond of GYN I have now, so after I get referral and if I like the GYN I will try to remember to post or send you his name.

In Guad. you have so many options of doctors and hospitals it is phenomenal. I have found the care here to be the same or better than in US. It is more personal here for sure. We have a friend, a doctor, who specializes in blood cancers and we tell her what is happening with me and she says Mexico is right on target, and also never to be afraid to be treated there with the right doctors etc. My Cancer dr. is in the US registry of Cancer surgeons etc. If nothing else our friend said Mexico was a tad more aggressive in treatment, which she wishes she coudl be but can't d/t all the rules and laws in US. etc.

Best Wishes and good luck to your sister elaine....
