We are shopping for a new mattress. We went to Sleepy's today. I wanted to look at the Serta memory foam mattress. The sales rep was very persistent in having me look at something else. I finally got a price on the something else, but she avoided giving me a price on what I really wanted a price on. I got the feeling that her commission was going to be much more on the something else mattress than the one I was interested in. I finally told her I would be back. We left and AGAIN gave up looking for a new mattress. These sales people just don't get it. The more you push me, the less likely I will buy from you.

Sleepy's is awful. It's like buying a used car in the bad old days...or like buying a timeshare.
Mattress manufacturers purposely give all their mattresses different coverings and different names so that you can't compare from store to store. My MIL worked at a mattress maker in the 1950s, and it really hasn't changed since!
Last time we bought a mattress, we went to Macy's with one of their percent-off coupons. Very straightforward, and the salesman was completely laid back. Good luck!

I have no earthly idea but I did find an interesting and informative website for purchases and the sales weasels. ( Wackster is correct, it sounds like a timeshare presentation!) Link at the end.
For the curious the Heavenly Bed is made by Simmons.
“Names that don't change are line up names ex: Beautyrest, Posturepedic, Perfect Sleeper... this is what makes real comparisons doable...” – mattress salesman ‘Budgy’ via internet.
The first thing you need to get straight in your head are the different “line up” models. Just the manufacturer’s model name, not the “exclusive” add-on name after it, like Windsor or Hamilton Cove. Here are is a summary of the majors:
Manufacturer: Line up Models
· Simmons: Beautyrest (mid level to high end)
· King Koil: Perfect Contour (low end), Perfect Contour Comfort Select (mid level), & Perfect Solutions (high end)
· Serta: Perfect Sleeper (low to mid level), Perfect Day (high end)
· Sealy: Posturpedic (mid to high level)
(visit the manufacturers website for the latest info)
Within each of these “line up” models is where you find the dozens of ‘exclusive’ names tacked on to the end – different names for every retail store but as discussed earlier, rarely any major physical variations (within similar price ranges). Shop by the Manufacturer’s line up model. At the end of the day there are a few different levels of each, usually accounting for more or less padding/foam.
The coil structure, different for each Manufacturer’s line up brand, is what you should focus most of your comparison on. The coil design in each of the beds within those models does not change. All Beautyrests are pocket coil, all Perfect Sleepers are continuous coil, all Posturepedics are offset coil. There is no way determine which is a “better” design, it’s all up to personal taste.
So get yourself determined to choose a coil design, or line-up brand, that you prefer.

If you call 1 800 Mattress with the store-specific name of the mattress (the one that makes it hard to compare the same mattress at different stores), they will give you a price on the "same" thing with a different name.
Sleepy's is a pretty awful shopping experience. I recommend one of the bigger department stores, but wait for a 50% off sale (they have them pretty regularly).

Bought on-line
We bought our last mattress on-line from US-Mattress.com. I did a lot of research before buying. We bought an expensive king sized mattress set. US-Mattress has excellent prices and their service is excellent. They delivered and installed plus removed our old one. I called them on the phone and was able to negotiate a lower price. Here is the link to their web site.
US-Mattress for Sealy, Stearns & Foster, Simmons or Serta Mattress Sets
We also bought some bedding sets from them as well. There was no sales tax which saved us a lot.John

JWC, thank you for the site. Did you test a mattress in a store before ordering?
Does anyone in the LI/NYC area have a good showroom recommendation? Is there a better choice than Macy's/Bloomingdale's?

My daughter works at a well known Canadian home furnishing store chain and the biggest commision she gets is on selling mattresses and by all accounts it's one of the biggest profit margins to the store. Probably you may get a reduction if you are going to walk out the store but it will be the sales staff who suffer by reduced commission and certainly my daughter is on minimum wage if she doesn't commission out.
As it happens I bought a Tempurpedic mattress from her at the weekend and paid the full advertized price as Tempurpedic will not allow stores to discount their products and I have that from my daughter and her store manager. My daughter still made $200 in commission though. I've told her I expect a free dinner at a good steak restaurant when she gets paid.
