    Hi there,

    Bringing home a puppy tomorrow.
    Never had a dog before!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ? HOUSETRAINING?

Did anybody ever bought a book or downloaded a system from
"TRAY-HOW TO TRAIN MY PUPPY- fast track system.?

He makes it sound very easy, but is it.....?

    Any advise?

    Thanks,

Have no idea about a puppy. I do saw people gather around in park to train puppy. It takes time and displine.

You may want to ask mod to remove this one to some forum like G&C cafe which will give you better expose there.

The true trick to training is consistancy. You can't be there one day and not the next. Once they get the hang of it, you are home free...

Yep, pp has it right. Dogs need routine and consistency.

Same time every day, same routine. when they do the deed, "GOOD DOG! GO PEE PEE!" or whatever (I like to have commands for everything, Piddle and Poopie), pop a treat into their mouths. Do the treat thing every time for a while. "treat" could actually be some of their own kibble.

if you catch flummums doing something inside, say nothing, scoop up dog to finish outside, Praise, reward.

Reward the positive, ignore the negative.

Set your dog up for success by keeping to a schedule good for puppy - as soon as they are awake in the morning, right after meals, last thing before bedtime. If you get the dog off schedule, it's not their fault they couldn't hold it or just don't have to go right then. Don't be mad at the dog for things that are the fault of the human.

          GOOD LUCK and Congratulations!!

Board Girl gave you great suggestions. All that I would add to it is: let pup out to p & P, but do NOT play with them at that time. Make that a separate outside activity. And take them to the same door each time. Had a friend that took their pup to a different door every time and poor pup didn't learn how to tell them what they want. Kota goes and sits by the front door every time she wants to go out....even if it is to look for bunnies And good luck. What kind of dog are you getting...treat them right and you'll have a great companion...

We have kennel trained our last two labs and would not do it any other way.
The dog is in the kennel by 10pm and doesnt get out until 6 am. A friend that has hunting dogs recommended we do this.
(This forces consistancy) The dog does not sleep with us. But she is on a bed in the evening in the living room.

The vet also recommended a Promise collar to walk the dog and it really controls her. It has a strap over the nose that imitates the mother correcting the dog and it works.

We did do obedience training with both labs but the dog we have now is 8 months old. We trained with a choke chain but finished the class with a promise collar and the trainer said go with whatever works.

Make certain the dog gets plenty of exercise and has toys. Our lab chews and toys help preserve things like shoes. We cannot let her leave our sight in the house or she likes to carry around and chew our things.

Steffi (shown here keeping the fish in line) is very much a creature of habit. Her routine makes our routine. It has been said that dogs train people to provide what they want and need, people only adapt to the dogs needs, they don’t train them. Steffi went to 3 of 6 scheduled training classes. The DW didn’t like the way the training was done and would not go back. Neither one is trained well for dealing with the other. Use single word commands, don’t do complete sentences like my wife does. SIT is fine.

Steffi’s routine does involve sitting by the door when she needs to go out. I wish she would say something, but she will come and get us if we don’t respond as quickly as she thinks we should.

She goes out more than she really needs, but that is what she does. She goes out after she eats, she goes out after we eat, she goes out before going to bed and sometimes she thinks we should go to bed earlier than we think we should go to bed.

Steffi is technically my wife’s dog, and it is funny to watch Steffi’s butt (and tiny tail) shake when mom is coming in the door. Steffi loves us both, but does treat us differently. Steffi will be 11 on Thanksgiving. She is still a puppy in many ways. She gives love more than anyone or anything I have ever known. She is our child, not a dog and some people disagree with they way we treat her, but it works for our life.

See if any local shelters or pet stores offer puppy training classes. The most important thing is consistency. We used a crate to train both our dogs and it worked well (typically animals don't like to sit in their own messes). If you work, make sure someone comes home to let the dog out. We've found that every other hour works best in the begining, then gradually extend the time between potty breaks. Take your dog for walks and get him/her used to other people and animals.
Play time is very important because puppies get bored. Also get some chew toys (we really like the Kongs because you can stuff them with treats, which encourages chewing the toy - and not the furniture).
You will need to "puppy-proof" your house and yard. Keep away anything of value that may be chewed or knocked over. Also, consider using animal-friendly cleaning and lawn products. Good luck with your new pet!

Can't wait to see the pix! Don't be afraid to post questions. Many of us are seasoned dog owners.

Another thought --- We have found that when our dogs were still quite energetic, a harness (which wraps around the entire body) worked better for walks than a regular leash (which attaches to the collar). The harness gave us better control over the dogs and doesn't cause choking when the dog tries to pull away. It took awhile to learn how to put the harness on quickly, especially when the dog is jumping around. However, the extra 30 or so seconds needed for the harness was worth it.

What a great thread with so much useful info, I do hope we get to see the pics soon.

My suggestion is to sign up for a good Puppy Class (often run by vets) as soon as she is old enough to be accepted.

It is a fallacy that puppy classes exist to train puppies. The purpose of Puppy Classes is to train the owners to raise well socialised, well mannered dogs. You will learn about dog behaviour and also how to communicate with your dog. You will be corrected when you don't get it right

There are some skills many people don't think to teach their dogs. Ask any vet how they feel when a dog is presented that hasn't been taught how to behave during physical examinations and wants to jump around on the examination table and bite . Fortunately vets can usually tell whether they have a stupid and irresponsible dog owner or a problem dog.

BTW it's a big secret that puppy classes are really for humans, so don't let on.

With all the ups and downs....it was the best decesion I ever made!
She is the idal puppy, saying this after I had her for a week now.
Yes it is true, we have to adjust to their schedule at least at the begining.
I am an evening person, going in bed at 11pm and watch TV till 12-12.30
amd love to sleep till 8 am.
Now it is 10 pm bedtime! Puppy is out, sleeping by 8.30pm and gets up between 6.30 and 7 am.
Despite all the advice: she sleeps with me right beside my pilow.
I accupy a king bed by myself. So there is room.
She did not pee or poo in bed at all and sleeps trough the night.
In the morning, gentle pull on nible on my hair to let me know, it is time to go. She is soft and gentle with me! Not with the rest of the family.....
One firm NO from me would stop any unwanted behavior towards me.
She loves getting on the school bus in the morning.
Also come to the school yard to pick up my girls in the afternoon.
Got the harnes, she is ok with that having it on, but the leash does not
agree with her!She would not walk with the leash. Very stubborn!
I can see the Shih-tzu side: stubbornness in her sometimes. We are working on those issues.
Took us 4 days to find a name for her, but than she learned it in 2 days.
CUKIE- means candy or sugar in hungarian.
Housebreaking: we had accidents during the day the firs 4 days.
Saturday, Sunday we were in our cottage, where we spent the whole day
outside, practicly....Not one pee or poo in the cabin!!!!!!!!!!!!
Since Monday she had no accident with me at all, Cukie does her business outside!!!! I watch her closely and also take her out every half an hour or
hour. Cukie thinks I am the alfa male in her world, she listens and follows me around. Kind of ignors my husband and loves playing with the girls.
Yes, she treats everybody different in the family.
It is very interesting to see.
My 10 years ol daughter has allergies to animals.
Not one sneeze or red eye or nothing.
Shih-tzu-Bichon is really hypoallergetic breed and very smart!
                              Highly recommend it.
Never had a puppy before and was scared to death, but CUKIE realy makes it easy for me.
Yes she is already spoiled!!!! but to a point that is making both of us feel good!
Sorry, this posting got very long, but it is soo much fun and there is so much to tell about her.
Thank you everybody for all the advice, will go to obedience school later
and will use some of the other info too.
Got lots of pîctures but I do not know how to post them.
                              Have a great day everyone!
