  • My son commissioned into the 101st Airborne "Screaming Eagles"

My son was commissioned into the 101st Airborne, "Screaming Eagles" yesterday.

On Sept. 11, the day the the towers fell, my son was a senior in Chaminade HS. He watched the images on TV for hours at end, as well as attending three funerals for personal friends that were victims of the attacks. Shortly afterwords, he made the decision to join the military, and help bring the terrorist to justice.

He put his plans for law school on hold, saying like others before him, he would go to law school after he did his part for his country.

Yesterday, he also graduated form Johns Hopkins University with a degree in Political Science.

It was one of the proudest days of our lives as parents, our son met the challenges of college, and was now an adult.

He leaves on June 4th, to begin his military commitment. This was a choice that he made from the heart, and although his father and I had many reservations about his decision, we stood beside him with pride, love and joy.

What a proud moment for your son

Congratulations to your son and also to you, his parents. He sounds like a young man who is mature beyond his years. Please thank him for his patriotism, selflessness and sense of duty and I'm sure I reflect the thanks of many other US residents and citizens of many countries.

Artsienang -- I too served in the military -- as a JAG officer (attorney) -- and have something you should tell your son to consider. The Army has a program called the FLEP program, which means Fully Funded Legal Education Program, that may interest your son if he desires to go to law school. This program is for active duty members who have at least 2 years of active duty under their belts and they can apply to go to law school paid for by Uncle Sam. It is difficult to get accepted into the program but the benefits are great. You remain in the military earning your normal pay while attending law school and the school is paid for by the Govt. After law school, you owe the Army 6 years as an attorney. It is a great way to get your law school paid for and also serve your country. It is something that your son should consider applying for after 2 years on active duty. Tim

Angela, Congratulations on that special event and special day you shared as his parents. It is truly one of life's blessings to enjoy the maturation of a child. He sounds like he is going to make such a difference in this world...and it has to be a wonderful feeling! God bless him as he goes forward. Thanks for sharing and thanks go to you and to your son for making such a sacrifice for our nation. I am sure there will be moments of apprehension, but I send you a great big hug and lots of blessings to your son, and I know others will be wishing for him the very best of everthing!

Angela, congratulations for bringing up such a responsible young man. It gave me goose bumps too like Frank wrote earlier. I hope sincerely that he will be safe together with our other young men, who are fighting for our freedom and safety. God bless them all.

                      Thank you very much.
