Buying cigarettes online

My son smokes, and is considering buying cigarettes online. The new tax in NY states has brought the price up to about $10 per pack.
Does anyone know if these cigarettes are safe? They are sold under the brand name, but Marlboro cigarettes say "under control of Philip Morris, S.A". I am conderned that there may be risks involved with smoking these cigarettes.
Can anyone tell me anything about this? If it is all ok, he would save approximately $70 per carton.

Not sure if you heard the news on 1010 wins about NY Blomberg cracking down on the Indian reservations but they just caught a few people selling those Cigarettes. IMO onlime is next.

Stock up when you leave NY or but the max PP at the duty free shopd at the airport if you leave the US

As a health teach I can say without a doubt that there are risks associated with smoking these cigarettes. Time for him to quit.

He is actually taking Chantix right now in an attempt to quit.
I work right near an Indian reservation, and sometimes he drives there. But now he is thinking about buying online.

Craig, other than the usual health risks from smoking (I am not trying to minimize them), are you familiar with any particular risks from smoking cigarettes apparently produced outside the U.S.?

I have always felt these are not the same - but then again there is such great risk just smoking anything, one kind is worse, the other is .. more worse. ( ita jacki, my DS does too ) Wish they would both smarten up and quit!

FWIW a friend in TX used to buy these online from the Indians all the time, extolled the virtues and tax savings etc - until he got a bill from the US Govt for the taxes due.
Was substantial too, more than $1500. Guess there is really no free lunch.

aside - DH just saw a newstand in NYC which was charging $12 a pack. !

I was behind a guy at 7-11 who bought a carton of Dunhills. It looked smaller than the usual American cartons. He also bought a lighter and a soda, and his total came to $96. Ouch!

I have a friend who buys Russian cigarettes on the internet. They're teeny little "lady" cigarettes, very thin and shorter than American cigarettes, but then again, she smokes two of them for every American one she would smoke.

They're good enough that she keeps ordering them, and she's told me they're inexpensive compared to U.S. brands, but I can't remember any of the specifics. I think she said there's a hefty minimum order and the shipping takes forever. Sorry to be very little help, but the bottom line is that the cigarettes seem okay.

When I was younger I remember rolling my own. No really no kidding really I did. They had a bad taste and smelled different with no filter. I stopped after about 3 smokes.

We get it, don't smoke it's gonna kill you. Jackio, buying cigarettes online is very risky. Not because they are "knock offs" of the real ones but because it creates an IP trail for local governments to track. They may eventually charge him for the taxes he is trying to avoid and include a penalty.

Can't answer directly but can say I am a former smoker, one of life's greatest pleasures to me was smoking!!! Truly! I would rather have smoked than ate! Anyway I hear that they are tracking these cig. purchases online to get the taxes etc. ( Of course what do I know I bought my cigs. in Mexico which started out at about $1.50 a pack and now are about $3.USD, they want people to quit too). Oh yeah anyway.....My oncologist told me I had to quit for chemo but if I chose could go back to them after chemo but he would be seeing me again at some time then....hmm. I quit many times thru my life...it is easier said than done, they say it is a stronger addiction than heroin. I have no clue as I never had heroin, but I still crave cigs. though a diagnosis of Cancer ( Breast), and the use of Wellbutrin ( Chantix can cause depression not something you give a Cancer patient LOL), I have not smoked in 16 months and have no intention of returning to them at those prices LOL. People quit only when ready, but maybe the Wellbutrin would work for some of those wishing to quit.

You can bring cigs back from Mexico it is only one or two cartons though I forget....a vacation here is nice!

If they are being imported from another country are you liable to import duty and other taxes? That would certainly be the situation in the UK.

Yes, legally the buyer is responsible for paying the taxes.

I really can't believe that the moderators have allowed this thread to continue. It is basically a thread requesting advice on the best way to illegally avoid paying taxes. I thought that would be against the board's code of conduct.

YOu are alo***d to buy Cigerattes at a Duty free shop at airports and if they allow Cigarettes to be sold at an Indian reservation then that is legal. YOu are allowed to buy Cigerattes out of state so why is there a probleem?

I buy almost every thing on line, in fact Cigars and wine are what i BUY MOST, Am I doing some thing wrong, No I am just looking for the best deals.
