  • NYC restaurant recommendations for UK visitors pls

A friend's 28 y.o. son and DIL are coming to NYC in mid December from the UK.
I want to take them for a nice meal, not too pricey, something that says "NY" -- something they might not be able to get in London or its surroundings.. Must be in Manhattan as they are not here too long and I don;t think they would wantto give up too much time to travel to the boroughs.
Also suggestions for a coffee/dessert type of place would be appreciated, in case they don't want to waste too much time with us

    Thanks guys!

For a unique NYC experience, I would get out of the tourist areas and head either to the village or maybe uptown.

We have a little local Harlem favorite that offers a unique NYC experience and is very reasonably priced - Voza: Voza Restaurant - Upper West Side - New York Magazine Restaurant Guide

      Chelsea:

Cafeteria on 7th and 17th is fun, not too expensive, and was in an episode of Sex and the City. Cafeteria - Chelsea - New York, NY

      Village:

      August August
      Choptank (great raw bar): CHOPTANK
Bobo (not cheap, but I love this place): bobo restaurant
Cafe Cluny: Cafe Cluny - West Village - New York Magazine Restaurant Guide
Market Table (I haven't been yet, but I like the owners' prior restaurants): Market Table - West Village - New York Magazine Restaurant Guide
There are so many great places in the Village. And after dinner, you can fall into the Duplex for a drink and its unique offering of singalong with the servers...

For coffee/dessert I like French Roast on 6th Avenue and 11th street. But for a more "famous" NYC coffee house maybe better to try Cafe Reggio on MacDougal (that's a fun area for the young to explore, very NYU) Caffe Reggio

eta: if you end up at Cafe Reggio and decide to have dinner after - Meskerem across the street is fun - Ethiopian food, no utensils. Very inexpensive, and after recovering their liquor license, they have some excellent bargain wines available. The place has little in the way of ambience, but it's a fun experience. Maybe geared a little more NYU than 28 y.o. Londoners, but we took someone there recently and had a great time.

If you want something that screams NYC then try either the Stage Deli (Stage Deli Online Store | Home Page) or Katz's Deli (Katz's Delicatessen New York). Katz's is where they filmed the infamous scene from 'When Harry Met Sally'. Both have good food. Katz's is a tad cheaper if I recall correctly. The Stage has better decor. I prefer the Stage's chopped liver sandwich over Katz's.

For coffee and a little nosh, the North Village Deli (North Village Deli Emporium - West Village - New York, NY) is always a good bet. Other fun places would be Joe's Shanghai (Welcome to Joe's Shanghai Restaurant official web site, home of Soup Dumplings) for soup dumplings (xiao long bao), then down the street to Delight 28 (Hee Win Lai / Delight 28 - Chinatown - New York, NY) for dim sum. I can also recommend Dhaba (Welcome to Dhaba NYC, the Truck Stops Here...) for Indian - but good Indian is readily available in London.

If they do want to have a little adventure, take the G train out to Brooklyn and have lunch at Christina's (Christina's - Greenpoint - Brooklyn, NY). Christina's has the best Polish food! I usually get the Polish platter. If they're serving white borscht soup get some.

Thanks for your post. Had been thinking of Stage or Katz' also.
Funny, we just ate at Christina's and enjoyed the food, but these guys are only in for a short time - basically a long weekend - so I'm trying to stick to Manhattan.

I'm so jealous! Most of my trips to NYC revolve around going to Christina's! The white borscht is made with fermented rye flour and has potato and slices of kielbasa. MMmmmm!
