I have a friend who grew up in Nevada, and he just taught me something:
Growing up in Nevada, Oct. 31 meant not only Halloween but a day off of school for "Nevada Day," celebrating Nevada's entry into the Union in the midst of the Civil War to ensure President Lincoln had enough electoral votes to win reelection eight days later, on Nov. 8, 1864. Happy Halloween, and Happy Nevada Day!
