As many of you know, I am a school nurse. Tonight I was notified that a one of our students, age 17, hung himself yesterday. He was found by his 3rd grade brother. My relationship with this student was very casual. He did not hang out in the nurse's office. He was not "needy". I only know of him because he recently had shoulder surgery and came in with notes, for ice, etc.
I can't even imagine what his family is going through. Of course, I can't shake the feeling that the school failed, somehow, to realize there was a problem. It haunts me to think that this young man was so troubled that he thought there was no way out.
I guess the message is - be aware. Talk to your kids. Count your blessings.
