  • Steffi not doing well

We are at the F-I-L and I take Steffi out to do her wet. She does a normal wet, walks a few feet and then squats and is peeing blood. This being Christmas eve, we are rushing to find a pet hospital. One we found closed at 12pm, so we are rushing to get there.

Test show a bladder stone. Last one 7 years ago needed surgery. Steffi is now 11. In addition to the stone, there are other areas showing on the ultrasound that don't look right. Best guess based on lab test is that it isn't cancer, could be smaller stones or just bladder irritation.

Steffi has a doctor's appointment on Monday, but at this point, it isn't looking good. Steffi hasn't been peeing blood since but the stone won't pass without surgery and at 11 years old, our options are limited.

I hope Monday brings some good news, but I am not very optimistic based on experience with her.

poor STEF! I send my strength her way. It is hard to watch any animal suffer.

Can't they ultrasound to break up the stone(s)?

Don it is your decision and not an easy one to make. 11 is not so old for a schnauser but old enough that surgery is risky. I know you will keep her quailty of life first in your thoughts.

It's hard to see your dog suffer so not a good Christmas for you. I hope that they can make Steffi better with the treatment that Lawren mentioned.

I hope she is comfortable and that they find an acceptable treatment option. Good luck

A few years back the male dog we had developed a hormonal caused rectal tumor that required surgery (he needed to be neutered) to correct. At that time the dog was probably 11 or 12 years old. I was very concerned about him having surgery at that advanced age but, he did great and tormented me for another 4 or 5 years.

Best wishes for a good outcome for you and your beloved pet. We lost our Toto at 11 - that is TOO early for any dog. They become so much a part of the family.

Hopefully the vet will have some good news/treatments on Monday.

Plenty of pet owners ...or is it owned by pets....people here who understand perfectly what you are facing.

Wishing you and Steffi the best.

No additional blood, she seems fine today but we know she must be hurting.

Stone type won't break up so has to be surgically removed. We will know more late tomorrow.

Many of the drugs they use for anesthesia nowaday work very well for dogs. I honestly think she'll probably do fine assuming she's in good health otherwise. Sometimes the recovery of older dogs takes a little longer but, they are often more resiliant than we give them credit.

I hope you get good news tomorrow. I know how stressfull the wait can be when it's your pet, companion and friend.

Your dog looks beautiful and I hope that she will be fine. Her age should not be a problem since she is a small dog. They seem to live longer.
