  • Just curious....How much food do you buy when preparing for a snow day?

I'm starting to think that snow days = food fest.

I bought so much food yesterday, you would think that we were going to be snowed in for a week.

I think many others had the same idea, because it was impossible to park at the supermarket, and once I finally got inside, the place was hopping.

Needless to say, I'm making a huge breakfast this morning......French Toast, eggs, bacon, toast, muffins........

What time are u serving the french toast????

I tend to think "soup" when I hear about bad weather.....so I took the Christmas ham bone out of the freezer on Monday evening and made a pot of Lentil Soup and a second, smaller pot of split pea - so I am all set!

I also make sure I have 3+ quarts of fat free 1/2 and 1/2 'just in case' because I REALLY need that for my coffee. REALLY!

We always have so much in house that it isn't necessary -- but like everyone else, we go anyway.
Generally buy an extra loaf of bread, gallon of milk, dozen eggs -- you know, just in case we are snowed in for a week
Also, I make sure to have some sort of bird food on hand, these little guys need help when it;s snow covered.

Lol.....I'm waiting for the crew to get up. Since I've been up since before 5, I've already got everything ready to go.

I sometimes think soup, too. Soup is great in this weather.

Not this time, tho. Yesterday I bought a turkey breast, and a roast beef. BTW, I've already got a full pot of sauce in the fridge. Lol

You buy bird food for the bird community? That's so thoughtful! What a nice thing to do. I'll have to remember that!

              Do you have a feeder?

We needed salad fixin's and milk, so we went to the store yesterday. Usually we stay away from the stores the day before a storm. It seems pointless to stock up for a storm, because if the power goes out we don't open the freezer or fridge and head to town for food. Since we have well water, we usually fill up some water jugs. 18" and counting, so we will probably not be going anywhere until Friday if the power stays on. We have a neighbor with a gas stove, so if we can't go anywhere, there is always the potential for a hot meal over there.

                  feeders...

Have a small seed feeder and a suet cake feeder that hang from a tree in a large picture window. Also scatter some stuff on the ground for those ground birds.

We have cats. They love to watch. Since the snow started (12/26) when the cats are up, they come downstairs and sit on the back of the couch, watching the birds. It's like TV for kitties.
They have two channels, BTV and STV (bird and squirrel).
They know the words/sounds - 'birds' and 'squirrel birds' and come running to the spot like a flash when I yell out to them if they happen to be upstairs.

I really started doing it for the birds when the ground is covered, but there are these additional benefits. I like to see all the varieties as well.

chili and baking on the menu here. maybe apple pancakes when the snow remover (DS) finishes up.

I just got cold cuts yesterday figuring we'd be in for a day or two.

                      I feel guilty, now...
We have a huge bag of bird food in the shed and completely forgat about it...
Kids are coming home, with schoolbus at 4 pm,
first thing will do, dig a path to the shed and find the feeders berried under the snow somewhere.

As far as humans go, we are in Toronto, so it is not as bad....
But in case got some milk, eggs, some fresh vedgeteables, fruits.
                      Bread: we make our own..

I am not leaving the house today, doing some laundry and mainly
cleaning and sorting in the kids room.
We are expecting a uprightpiano, yehaa- tomorrow!

                      If they can make it....

                      Enjy the snowday everybody.

Kitty TV is GREAT! I like when they "chatter". Mine used to have a wildlife channel too. Groundhogs, bunnies and occasionally deer.

I will have to put in a feeder here in the spring. I've only seen a jay and some sparrows. Miss my cards, finches and occasional oriole. Not seen evidence of wildlife yet although I have a HUGE backyard.

The chatter of the teeth -- all my generations of cats have done that when they see birds. Hilarious.

Now the big boy is pawing the window (soft paws). He loves to run up to the couch and chase them away. Makes him feel like the powerful lion he really is

On a day like today, soup sounds good too (for me). Think we've got some Progresso around, lentil or split pea.. Maybe one day I"ll make some but today won't be the day (no fixins).

Time to take care of those birds.....again.

I must admit I tend not to buy much in the way of extras. I did make sure we had enough milk and eggs for breakfast, but that's about it. I can throw together some matzoh ball/chicken soup if absolutely necessary...
It's always hard for me to imagine getting really stuck for very long, and it's never been an issue.

Then again, this is the first year I haven't had an SUV, so maybe I should rethink...

Good luck Tony! I hope you don't lose your electric, but good that you have a neighbor with a gas stove, just in case.
