You live in MN, for goodness sakes!

The very south shore didn't fair as badly as the rest of LI esp. the north shore....it was icy but the temp was 36-37 at 7 am.
DH's business still did a 2 hour delay because of all the icy roads.

I was there one year the weekend that you can't walk on the lakes.

I caught a walleye and it was already fileted and frozen.

Ok-Don't hate people but I do not understand what an ice storm is. I understand the result. I understand icy roads and black ice but what is different about an ice storm VS a snow storm? Is it instantly ice? Layman terms please.

Ice storms are far worse than snowstorms. Ice is heavy and it brings down trees, powerlines, roofs....truly treacherous.

There two forms of ice storms. There are sleet driven ones (sleet makes a beat. you can hear it falling) and frozen rain driven ones, where it rains until it hits the frozen ground, tree, car, etc and turns to ice. Of the two I'd choose sleet because it bounces off the trees and powerlines, etc.

I guess most of us here in the NYC tri-state area had a snowstorm first and then the frozen rain/ice on top. I know I did. So Frank had to use 100 pounds of salt and many cigars clearing his walkway.

One way to look at the ice v. snow thing is that ice is only slightly less dense than water (92%), and under some conditions can be more dense than water, so their weights for the same volume are pretty close (yes, ice cubes float according to my survey).

Snow can be various densities, but the commonly used yardstick is that it is 10% as dense as water. Snow is less dense than liquid water, by a factor of approximately 10 at temperatures slightly below freezing, and even more at much colder temperatures.

So, on the average it takes 9 inches of snow to equal the force of 1 inch of ice. Plus, if the ice falls as freezing rain, it clings to and builds up on tree limbs and power lines. Snow cannot accumulate that way.

We have had several roof collapses and dock sinkings here and at Lake of the Ozarks today. That is because the snow accumulated on flat, or mostly flat surfaces. Our dock was listing lakeward, so we got the boat out of it and ran the lift up as far as we could. Our storm started with ice/sleet and changed to snow. Lake of the Ozarks has 20 inches of snow on top of the ice.

                        Wow.
                        You guys are scaring me.

So what do you do when the electric goes out?
How do you stay warm? Could you freeze to death?

I thought we had it bad with hurricanes but this sounds much worse.

And what do you do with all that salt?
Doesn't that ruin your car undercarriage?

Boy am I glad I live in FL.

I can't wait until spring - I am SO over the snow and ice. We used 50 pounds of salt on our walkway leading to the area where we park our cars. The ice was more than 1 inch thick and all that salt didn't do much at all. We resorted to pouring hot water over the ice and then breaking it up with an ice chipper. It took more than 4 hours to get the ice off our cars and it would have been even longer if the temps hadn't gone above freezing. We need someone to put a giant magnifying glass over the northern US and bring some warm air back to get rid of the snow. Retirement in FL is looking better and better! Everyone stay safe and warm. Hopefully you won't have too much damage from these ongoing storms and we'll soon be complaining about the heat!

A few years ago, we were without power for 3 days from an ice storm. Since we have a well, there is no water without electric. My house is all electric so no stove either. We use a wood stove for heat so we weren't cold. We used the barbeque to cook or got take out but there wasn't much to do without lights, TV or internet. Worse part - no showers for 3 days!
