Sorry for your loss! We had my wife's dad pass few years ago while we were in Maui and as sad as it was we were lucky. Her family left messages on our home phone but no one tried calling our cell phones to tell us. We were able to enjoy our vacation and coming home before hearing of this.
The funeral was the next day so we made it and her family all said they never thought of calling our cell phones or our condo to tell us.
What was strange was that he lost his wife four months earlier after 50 years of marrage and just before we left he told me to have a great time and then stated he didn't think he would be around much longer. We thought he was going to break our daughter he hugged her so tight! I guess he knew!

I'm very sorry for your loss. Very sa.
My sister's FIL was sick for a long while and he took a turn for the worse each time they planned a vacation. After several canceled vacations, they decided to go and let nature take its course. He eventually passed and my BIL was able to be with him on his last days.

The funeral went fine, but when we finished the cemetery part of the event, the funeral director noticed my mother's head stone about 15 feet from where the plot had been dug. Oops. Snow had been removed from where they thought the plot was and where they dug, but removing the snow also uncovered the headstone where the plot should have been placed.
We were into 1 hour of our 3 hour drive back home when I got the call that the plot had been redug and all was fine. It was just odd enough that it gave us a laugh on the drive home.Don
