  • Groupon Rocks!

I am NOT a coupon cutter. In general, I am more than willing to pay full price so that I don't have to clip and carry coupons to grocery stores.

However, I finally signed up for Groupon and I love it. My wife has had an account for a while. She tells me when there is a good deal and we get the groupons for meals. We have gotten, DK steakhouse in Waikiki (Prime Steak), Maile's Thai Bistro (our favorite restaurant on the island), Michel's at the Colony Surf (French) and others. We just missed the Hiroshi Yakiniku Groupon my waiting one hour before trying to sign up. Always 50% off.

After seeing a thread over yonder, I decided to check it out myself. They were running a Kobe Steakhouse special and I actually got a $60 Groupon for $30. Steak Teppanyaki for 2 for $30 is unbelievable in Hawaii and unheard of in Waikiki.

That's it. I am a fan. We love to eat out and the best restaurants on Oahu participate. If you plan on coming to Oahu any time in the next year, sign up for the Oahu notifications and ask me if the restaurant is worth trying. You'll thank me later.

      Frank,

As I said, I am totally averse to coupon clipping. Anytime some posts a deal, I avoid it like the plague. This time, they got me. Hit me at my weakest point.... eating.

It costs $15 to get a decent burger here in Honolulu. If I can get a prime steak for the same price, I'm signing up for that all day long.

Love Groupon too. Have seen a special art exhibit, had horsebacking riding lessons, rented Blockbuster videos super cheap, and bought quilting fabric. Have already purchased but not used yet: hot air balloon rides, deep sea fishing, paddle boarding lesson, cupcakes, premium chocolates, water taxi rides, and a few more things I can't recall off hand.

I love the variety of offerings - somehting for everyone. I love the chance to try things (like the hot air balloon ride) that is just way too expensive full price for 3 of us. And I can treat DH and DD to special fun things to try like the paddle boarding lesson and the horse back riding lesson.

I usually call the merchant directly if I have any serious questions to ask before buying. I have not had one issue redeeming a groupon either, which is very nice.

I have also once 'changed my mind' on a purchase - cancelled the balloon ride groupon in one location I had bought a few weeks earlier in favor of an offer in a different location. I emailed groupon asking if I could do this and the rep responded within a few hours that is was 'no problem'. I received a credit balance (they do not give cash type refunds, FYI) shortly thereafter and I used it to buy the new hot air balloon rides.

I recently read an article from a merchant - he wasn't too happy with how groupon operated from his side of the equation. While I felt the guy engaged in some misplaced blame, it was interesting to get the other viewpoint.

I have been underimpressed but it is probably the locale that I have selected. Northern NJ just doesn't have me singing their praises. There are some great NYC things.

I did select Nice and Paris groupon, just in case something great comes along before my trip. Of course I can't "read" those offers and the translation leaves a bit to be desired....

It looks like opening a store is pretty easy. I'd go into it in detail but I have the distinct impression this one might boomerang on me.....

I know...northern NJ never has anything that I use. Although we tried Rose's of Englewood recently and thought it was very nice, very homey and the prices were so reasonable that we will go back even w/o the Groupon. I have another Groupon if you want to go for lunch one day, Lawren!

                      I'm liking that idea!

                      Speaking of Groupon Nice, France:

                      Original text:

Le deal du jour : Offrez-vous une escapade d'1h en mer avec une location de bateau sans permis chez Espace Bleu pour 25 euros au lieu de 65 !

The deal of the day: Give yourself a break of 1 hour at sea with a boat rental without a license from Blue Area for 25 euros instead of 65!

                      Offer

Location de bateaux sans permis pour une promenade d'1 heure
Boat hire without a license for a walk of 1 hour

Bateau semi-rigides ou rigides de 6 CV maximum avec cabine
Boat semi-rigid or rigid 6 hp with maximum cabin

Embarquement pour 1 à 6 personnes et profitez entre amis ou en famille d’une ballade en mer
Boarding for 1-6 people and enjoy with friends and family a ride at sea

Naviguez dans le golfe de Saint-Tropez
Browse in the Gulf of St. Tropez

They'd be searching the Mediteranean Sea for me with this one.... IF I figured out walking said boat for our one hour browse in the one hour provided.

For what I have to charge to rent mine, I'm already Groupon-ing (without the coupon)...

I have only been on Groupon for just over a year and have loved it. There are a plethora of similar sites like DealFind, WagJag, PriceDodger and LivingSocial amongst others. Myself I prefer WagJag as there is more stuff in the Ontario region and each has it's strengths and weaknesses.

Now all I am waiting for is another skydiving one in a more local region. Missed out on my opportunity to go in Orlando Karen could not decide whether she wanted to go or not.

I signed up for my local groupon for about two weeks. Most of it was for things I would not otherwise want---none of them were local restaurants I frequent, for example.

I unsubscribed pretty quickly. I'm glad to hear that other locales have better hit rates.
