Inova Fairfax Hospital Patient/Visitor Information - Inova Health System
Look like Regan National Airport will be the closed one, But since it is on 495 and route 50 ( Inova Fairfax Hospital - Google Maps ) if you have to take car, it will be Dullas. But I will call the hospital to check if they have any shuttle service to the nearest Metro and which metro station it will be, and if so, I will fly to Regan.

Kay, I don't know from personal experience, but I googled and found this page:
Closest airport to Fairfax, VA
It says Washington Dulles is the closest and it is 11 miles from the center of Fairfax. Washington National (Reagan) is 14 miles.
Considering where you are, and the wait times and travel time for airlines, maybe you would be better going by train to downtown Washington and then taking the Metro out to Fairfax? Or even a bus or car service down there?
Many hugs and prayers for you and your family. Good luck!

Found this page
Public Transportation - Inova Health System
So, it does not provide shuttle, but Public Bus does has service from metro line to the hospital, But if you fly to Regan, you need to make one metro exchange (see Metro - Home page and Metro - Rail - Maps - Rail/Google Map) You will take blue line from Regan airport toward Largo, and exchange to Orange line at Rosslyn station (5 stop after airport), and toward Vienna/Fairfax-GMU, 7 stop after the exchange is the Dunn Loring-Merrifield.
Then the bus.
You can use the metro's trip planner (WMATA - Rider Tools - Trip Planner), than type the REAGAN NATIONAL AIRPORT to INOVA FAIRFAX HOSPITAL
The bus will be
FAIRFAX CONNECTOR BUS 402 (401-402 Backlick-Gallows Road) towards FRANCONIA METRO,
1C BUS (http://www.wmata.com/bus/timetables/va/01c.pdf) towards FAIR OAKS MALL.
It may take a long wait though, for example 1c bus is about 1 hour wait in no rush hour, and 402 is about 30 min wait
But it does has 2 buses around that metro
Express train will do the same.

If take rail, it should stop at union station, which will be Red line toward Shady Grove, than transfer to Orange line at metro center.

Kay, first, I am so sorry and send my prayers to you and your son.
Second, Dulles is the closest airport, but it is about 10-12 miles from the center of Fairfax (if memory serves me correctly). DCA is a little further, but the on ground transportation will be better.
I would opt for DCA since it places you in a better position logistically for on ground transportation even though it may be a longer distance.
