  • going to New York Sept 2-12. Need recommendations

Okay, I am heading back to New York City and I am looking for recommendations.

First, let's get together somewhere. Looking forward to going out with Big Frank for dining.

Second, what are the best musicals and plays right now. Gotta see Jersey Boys. I didn't see it last time. Do I need to pre-purchase tickets? Or, are the available yet at TKTS?

Third, anyone have US Open ticket contacts? Can't scalp them at the event any longer. Not sure why.

Fourth, always looking for restaurant recommendations.

Book of Mormon is a huge hit. I haven't seen it but if you don't like South Park I would stay away. My boys are going on Saturday. My aunt (older) went last week and hated it. Still, it's one of the hottest tickets in town.

Warhorse has great reviews and is on my list. I am finally getting to see it in August. There are some discounts for that on Broadwaybox.com but not sure if they'll still be discounted by September.

I don't think I have contacts for Open tickets but if I hear of any I will let you know. I may get lucky and get invited back this year by friends with a box, so I can ask then.

I would love to get together. Am supposed to be in Italy later that week, but there's a lot of time between now and then and I'm not sure I'll really get to go.

I will send you some restaurant reco's when I have a chance, but many of my local faves are in the sticky posted by Grayfal in the NY forum. For the theater district my new favorite is the Aureole Bar Room. Smaller portions and not inexpensive, but a bargain compared to the much spendier dining room. For a special ($$$$) meal the dining room is excellent. We ate their once for company holiday dinner. This is NOT the old, stuffy Aureole of Upper East Side past.

For inexpensive, good Turkish food in the theatre district, try Dervish.

Just what I was looking for! Thanks Glitter. A few more like that and I'll be set. Definitely going to Katz. Didn't get a chance last time.

I did mean "there," not "their."

        Jim,

As I think about what else to suggest, will kids/DW be joining you?

eta: I just checked my post in Pat's sticky (under "restaurants for UK visitors"), and though the post isn't very old, a few of the restaurants are no longer in business.

If you are going to Katz's that will have to be the day I come in, of course if we have a group thing I'll be there as well. Haven't been there since I left 32 Ave of Americas. Was a long walk with my office friends and I miss it. YUM RUEBEN YUM

          Will research OPen tix.

Unfortunately, my wife is not coming on this trip. Someone has to stay back with the kids as they will be in school. My mom and cousin will be with me.

Hmm. It will be interesting to see the restaurant recommendations for UK visitors. My guess it would be anything with an open sign.

Ha! It was actually a request by a member for 'non-touristy' places to take specific younger visitors from the UK. I recommended mostly places in Greenwich Village, a great neighborhood with much more local flavor than midtown. I will come up with some more ideas for you. Let me know if you want more culture/tourist sightseeing/ local spots/etc...

                I see.

Always looking for new ideas. Culture and local spots sounds great. Don't really need sight seeing.

Jim, you need to come out to Brooklyn. It's where it is all happening and Joe and I can give you a tour.

Okay. I am ready to go. I had to shorten my trip to Sept 6-12. But, it should be an outstanding trip nonetheless.

I got US Open tickets for Thurs, Fri and Sat day sessions. Get to see Men's Quarters, Men's and Women's Semis and some doubles finals. Woo hoo!

Gonna hit Jersey Boys probably on Sun 9/11. And, another choice probably on Wed depending on what is available via TKTS.

I was actually in NYC last month with my oldest son visiting Universities. So, we got to hit Katz' deli. Great, Great Pastrami.

Now that I have most of my itinerary set. I've got to fill it in with restaurants.

Mom wants to go to Lombardi's. I want to find a great steak house, Greek and Indian food.

                        I love NYC.

How to Succeed in Business is an excellent and funny show. There is a discount code on BroadwayBox.com for it which was just extended into November.

I recommended hitting Ruby Foo's at some point as well.

Have a good trip! Maybe I will see you if the get-together is on a weekend.

My son had a great time on his University trip. He now has his list for applications done. I'd be happy if he got into any of his top choices.

Great score on the Open tix - maybe I will see you there Saturday

                              Greek:

Pylos: 128 East 7th street, bt 1st and Avenue A. This is a great neighborhood and excellent food, reasonable prices. Make a reservation. If you have time, stop in a few doors down either before or after at Desnuda for oysters steamed under glass in front of you. Very interesting place with no kitchen but a lot of sushi preparations and innovative use of torches for cooking.

Other greek option, upscale: Milos - 125 W. 55th, right near Manhattan Club if you need to stick close to theatre

                              Indian:

                              Upscale: Dawat, Darbar

Good neighbhorhood indian: any number of places in Curry Hill - Curry in a Hurry is one, there are other more sit-down. For Curry Hill, take Lexington Ave subway to 28th street, walk East to Lexington, head in either direction. There is, or at least used to be, a good place on the north corner at 25th or 26th and Lex.
Other option, very inexpensive: Go to 6th street and 2nd avenue, walk east and pick a place b/t 2nd and 1st, there are a lot to choose from. Fun neighborhood around there.
