  • Any knitters here?

I just learned how to knit last week. Well, maybe not quite "learned," but I've got a pair of knitting needles and a long hot mess of something I've been working on. I know how to do the "garter stitch," and I can "knit" but the purling is really uncomfortable. I need to go get a lesson to figure out a couple of basic things like how to purl properly, what to do with the ends when one hank is finished, and how to actually stop at the end of a piece. I plan on sewing pretty beads over the places where I made mistakes (don't try to knit in the dark theatre on your first day knitting ).

So who else knits? I need a support group!

I have always wanted to know how to knit. But, I don't.

    I cross-stitch and needle=point.

I know what needlepoint is, but what is cross-stitch? Is that like crochet?
My mom used to needlepoint, she made some really pretty pieces. My friend's mom made beautiful tapestries with needlepoint.

Cross stitch is kinda like needlepoint except you make X's. It's counted. I have tried it all. Knitting, cross stitch and crochet. I made a couple really nice shawls by way of crochet when I was a young girl...a teacher taught me how to do it and I would stay after school with her....now I don't have the patience. Many say it relaxes them and I'm all for that...but it has the opposite effect on me I want to be crafty..I really do ..but it just isn't me. But I can most certainly appreciate an artists work and the time, patience, and love that comes with every created piece.

I used to be able to knit, back in my 4-H days. I made some wormy scarves and some very odd slippers. But I learned from my grandmother, and it turns out I don't knit in the "newer" way. Anyway, I was never good enough to be able to help you. How about a knitting store? They're always nice about helping with those little things, and you might be able to go to a class at one.

I thought I saw a groupon or living social deal for this type of class. Let me go dig.

I used to be able to crochet but it was always too tight and curly. Knitting needles could be used as a weapon though. hmmmmm.
I do like crewel work and embroidery and am much more successful with them.

I have a friend who used to do petit-point. That's very fine needlepoint. The pieces he made were beautiful. I was looking for an example--his was this kind of quality:

Micro Petit Point Austrian Purse at Morning Glorious Vintage

But he only did about two or three pieces (about the size of dollhouse rugs) and then he lost interest.

Lefthanded and spatially dyslexic. Back in the day there was no one lefthanded who I could learn from so I never did.

Around here, local library has (free) classes, so does the parks department for nominal charge.

If these options can't work in your area, yarn stores often have classes, and lots of people around for support.

It is beautiful but in all honesty needlepoint bores me to tears as does cross-stitching, I need variation, and with my old eyes I'd need a magnifying lens to even do something that fine.

My mom is very "crafty" and did just about everything: paint, sew, needlepoint, macrame, but knitting is the one thing she never did. I don't know if she tried and didn't like it, or just never bothered to try. I did try to learn, but never got beyond knitting rows that either seemed to get larger, or smaller, as I went along. Maybe I can claim Irene's "But I'm left handed" excuse.

I don't have the patience for any of this stuff! People who enjoy knitting and crocheting find it relaxing, but it makes me crazy.

I'm with you on that one. My mother used to do it all. She made needlepoint purses, pictures, etc. I still have lots of this and am so glad. She knitted me a fisherman's knit sweater that was the most gorgeous sweater I had ever seen. Unfortunatly, it burned up in the fire and Mom didn't want to make me another one, she said it was the hardest thing she'd ever done. shaggy

Yes, my grandmother made some beautiful things. Unfortunately she was terrible at sewing, so she would have all the pieces, but nothing ever matched up right when she did the finishing. I still have a little sweater that she knitted for my oldest daughter (when Grandma was in her 90s), and it bears all the hallmarks of Grandma--the knitting is lovely, but the stripes don't match up and the buttonholes are huge!

I kept a lot my Grandmother knitted things too...especially the blankets she made for my kids as babies. She eventually graduated to using knitting machines...wow that stuff looked pro. She wanted to give me her "serger" before she passed...but I didn't know what it was so I declined.

I crocheted blankets and sweaters for the kids when they were newborn, still have them.

Glitter, I am having a pretty darn hard time visualizing YOU knitting Really REALLY!
