  • Groupon Changes Q&A Format. Doesn't Allow Negative Questions

I am a big user of Groupon. I like many of the deals offered, love their responsive customer service policy, etc.

Very recently I noticed that they no longer allow questions to be immediately posted. Questions have to be reviewed by a moderator. In additon, no question seems to get posted until there is a corresponding answer. Which seems fine until there is a long lag time between someone (me) posting a question and the question actually getting posted. What happened to it, I wonder? So I called the merchant directly and got an answer. Not a big deal, I often call the merchants for clarification. Merchant gave me the info and checked the Groupon website while I was talking to her - she said there was a fair number of outstanding questions.

The particular question I had was regarding what fee would be charged for upgrading the groupon purchased, which was stated in prior Q&As could be done. Others began asking the same question (what was the charge) and the 'answer' was 'the merchant wants you to call them for this info'. So I decided to post the answer I received from the merchant. The 'answer' was fairly straightforward but result was that if you upgraded, savings from 40% to 17% or even 15% depending on exactly what you did. While not a killer savings, it was good enough for me and I bought the groupon.

But Groupon not only did not accept my post (it's still not posted and it's the next day), but they sent me an email saying that I could edit (cancel) my purchase if I wanted too. I didn't request this in any shape or form and I can only assume it's in response to my unposted post by a moderator (the email does say it's from a moderator). Wow. In the recent past people did post additional information they had about the deal, not in a question format. And sometimes is was very openly questioning why the offer was even being made as it wasn't much of a deal at all. I found this type of post helpful as it made me check even more carefully into some deals before deciding to buy or not. Now apparently this is not allowed, especially if the info is deemed to be detrimental or unfavorable.

I hope this is not the beginning of the end of my love affair with groupon.

I purchased two items at the same time; it turned out that I, essentially, couldn't use them in my area because there were no facilities available. I wrote to complain. They said they would refund my money, and they did--but only for one.

I wrote to say that I had purchased two, sent the numbers, etc. NO REPLY AND, CERTAINLY, NO REFUND ON THE SECOND ONE.

      I've learned a lesson.

I am sorry to hear that. So far I've had nothing but good experiences - and I've had to cancel a few groupons after purchase. A few weeks ago I realized I had bought 6 Segway adventures - and the groupon expired several weeks before our scheduled vacation! Oops! I emailed them about my goof and had the credit inot my account within a few hours (I have since spent all of it).

As a 'test' I posted an all good review for a current deal (we had purchased this same deal several months ago, which we did use and it was indeed all good) and that was posted almost immediately with a thank you response. The post I submitted for the other deal (where what I said showed that the deal wasn't a very good deal if you upgraded, but was a good deal if you didn't) never was posted.

I only read the Q&As for deals I am interested in. I will be paying particular note to see if any 'negative' posts are allowed going forward. I am hoping this was a one-off by an 'enthusiastic' groupon employee rather than a new company policy.
