Robert, so sorry that Irene destroyed your house but how lucky you were that neither one of you were home when the tree came down. That could have been a lot worse.

Robert,
Terribly sorry to hear about your home. You're so right that life can change in an instant. Thankfully, no one was injured, and you can rebuild.
Best wishes to you & Carol going forward!Angela
If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.
BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

No one was injured, just yanked into mental realization that all can change instantly.
Lots of time and effort has been destroyed, but at least it was all enjoyable and now we get to do more of it.
Many needed income and we wanted to remodel. Be careful what ya ask for!
Sending this, as someone may have some clue.
Mainly looking for guidance as to what we are allowed to do. I know how to keep a log and receipts.
SIL's (Dan) house is insured with Allstate, ya know the ones we are in good hands with. We are "homeless" due to Irene. Allstate has yet to give guidance as to what we may or may not do as far as comfort. So far I keep a log and receipts.
We have people to hole up with, but this is not right.
The house is unsafe. The county has condemmed it.
We are packing everything for relocating, but have no idea as to where.
Seems odd to us that Allstate didn't find us a place and put our stuff in airconditioned storage. It has been a week now.
Does anybody know about these things? Most likely we will go into an apartment and take "livables" with us and put the rest into storage. Might lodging be $30 per day per person? How about food?
My oldest son has a saying about stuff like this, "WAA."Robert

RE: My Damaged Home Is Not Safe.
Will My Insurance Cover the Cost for Temporary Living Arrangements?
If your policy has Additional Living Expenses coverage, and a loss that your policy covers makes your home uninhabitable, then your policy would pay for additional living expenses needed to maintain your normal standard of living.
Check your Allstate policy to see if you have Additional Living Expenses coverage and what your limits are. One of their claim representatives also can assist you with these and other questions.

I don't understand what and why you are even having to ask that question. When my house was destroyed by fire the insurance agent was there the next day with a check to find a place to rent and buy the essentials that I needed. That was on a Friday and he told me if I ran out of money to just call him and he'd cut another check. My adjuster was great!!
I asked him how could I spend that money so fast and he said Leslie, you don't even have underware, deoderant, etc. let alone a place to stay. That's when it hit me with what was ahead of me.
I'd contact your agent and get him to get an agent outhere yesterday!! I know that this is a different situation from mine as there were more than you needing help, but enough is enough!!

Insurance guy came. Had no answers. Would by checking and get back to us. Another agent took over from the first one. He had no clue. They have been passing the buck along. It has been a week now.
Meanwhile, all I do is log everything and keep receipts in hopes of reembursement.
Just don't know limits or what will not get covered.
Looking for some guidance as to what is customary... and what amount for lodging and food stuff.
For Being in Good Hands... I wonder what hands!!!
We are doing ok, just wonder What in the World, seems they would have this down pat. A Guidance Phamplet would be nice.Robert

Homeowners insurance policies vary based on the
type of home you own and the state you live in.
First thing you may want to do is to make an extra copy of
your/Dan`s Homeowners Insurance Policy for your records.
On the main page your should see what is
included and the amounts and premiums...
Policy Coverages and Limits of Liability
Section 1
A Dwelling
B Other Structures
C Personal Property
D Loss of Use - Additional Living Expenses
What is the LOU-ALE amount listed for D?
Study your policy and highlight the most important areas!

My brother happens to be in MI till 26th so we are holding up here.
Does Allstate have rentals "in their hip pocket", or do we find a place then see if it meets a certain criteria?
We are spending a bunch for eats.
I believe insurance will pay for cost overrun, (over and above our norm). But how much excess will they pay for? Buying a little at a time runs more than a weeks worth of groceries. A half gallon of milk is only 50 cents less than a gallon.
Restaurants are not reasonable, as we all know.
I'm sure Allstate and the others are overwhelmed.
I'm ranting. Thanks for your ears and comments.

Sorry you are going through this, but glad that you are all okay.
I live 3 houses from the Atlantic ocean. The 3 main hurricanes that hit us in 2004, did lots of damage to lots of people at the same time. We were very lucky, having just had a new metal roof put on and good windows installed. Everyone around us, not so lucky. It took weeks for some people to get to see their insurance agents. Some people had to move out of their houses immediately, others could live in area partitioned off. none of us had power for over 3 weeks.
Bottom line, most were treated pretty shabbily. Insurance companies fought like hell to not pay anyone... We are not in a flood zone, so no one had that insurance. Yet many people were told that it was flood damage, even though at the beach we pay for a seperate rider for "wind" (hurricane, at least $3k per year above regular homeowners). It was very horrible for many people.
Then getting repairs done, hahaha. We have an inground pool and a large german shepherd, and our fence was gone. Called the first day we could get back to our house (had been evacuated from island). They claimed they took jobs in order they came in, maybe so. Our fence was built 9 months after storms... with our cash $7k, fence was a seperate rider we found out AFTER damage...
Keep after Allstate. You are in your own good hands. Be persistant, and try to stay calm. There is no good reason they cannot answer your questions.
No matter the insurance companies size or reputation, they are not really in business to pay claims...
