I want to share with all of you how Trip Advisor (TA) has treated me.
As a member on a free site they will allow you to post comments and reviews on their site. At first they seemed like a good site. As time went on for me, I began to see right through them. Actually, they are a controlling good ole boy network. They have total control. If one would post a comment they don't like they will pull the"closed topic" card. You can no longer comment.! There have been many topics with over 50 comments and when it gets too hot in the kitchen they say, "all that can be said has been said" and close it because they don't like what they hear!! What? With that many comments it would reason that because so many people have responded it is a hot topic and let's hear from everyone that wants to speak.
Sometimes they will delete the whole topic claiming some topics do not meet their standards (control) but they leave topic in the listings. However, they leave the comments to that topic so if you are reading it ,it makes no sense because of no topic ! Why not shut down the whole topic/thread ?
They used to have a question at the end of a review, "was this review helpful ? click yes or no. Well, after people were using the "no" feature too much for them
they removed no but left yes (control again). If you can only answer yes how fair is that? Remove both!!!!!!
There are two main questions on their site. This occupies two of their most popular forums.
#1 How do you contact TA ?
To contact TA you have to jump through hoops and answer questions to find the "Contact Us " button. All the while they claim there is 144 ways to "contact us" if you just look. IF you can find the contact button all you get is the same cookie cutter generated email answer.Thank you bla bla bla. Try their phone # ? Again some generated bla bla bla answer and to leave a message you must know part of the spelling of someone who (works ?) there ! Try their fax # ? It's not a fax, it just rings and rings. And, even if you use snail mail, they never answer. So many people have asked why not have a very visable contact area maybe on the first page maybe in a different color or flashing to make it easy to find but they refuse.(control) Here is where I got trashed. After another complaint of how to contact them I answered that they didn't want to be contacted. Well ! Control took over then ! They said I was making policy and representing TA and they BANNED me, really! I can't make policy for their site. That"s stupid !
#2 Where is/what happened to my review ?
Their standard answer, did you respond to an email from TA? Tell them that up front. They will take down reviews they don't like.(CON...) They are driven by places that pay them so the places will look good. Go there sometime and see the bias.
They ask for help to make their site better but turn most of them down. They operate like they are stuck in the 90s. I mean tech stuff that is so simple that one would think they just started out. If they don't like the idea.....down it goes ! One of their answers, " been asked before ". CONTROL
They have no idea how many people just quit on them and move on. People don' t want to hunt all around to contact them. People want real answers from real people. If someone wants to know what happened to their review give them an answer they can sink their teeth into. No one wants bla bla bla.
Then, there is one member (not staff ) that thinks they have to answer almost everything that comes to that site. That is so overdone !
They have taken away my freedom of speech. They have indorsed censorship.
Now to close. After banning me from their site, they send me a email THAT ASKS ME TO GO TO WORK FOR THEM !
    Sorry, I won't be controlled!

They did not respond to me directly but a generated statement from TA was that
it was a spam going around and I just happened to get one and pay no attention.
Yeh, right. I think they are messing with me.

Bing, I think I first ran into you on an obscure European timeshare forum that I moderated for a while. Looks like you spend a lot of time on line. It says something that I've never banned you from a site- or maybe it says a lot of things. Anyhow, many sites are dominated by an individual or a clique and if the tolerance level is low the site will be restrictive and/or boring to some extent. Since this site came about due to unhappiness with another we may be more sympathetic to rebellious individuals. We do however, draw the line somewhere and if I was unrestricted, we would have one less member.

Sounds like the Nazis at TUG to me. At least we only have one (and a half) moderators that can't get enough

I have been a member of Trip Advisor for many years and have submitted many reviews. I also participate on their forums I always check hotel reviews on TA when traveling to an area we are not familiar with. I have no problem with TA and it helped us a lot.

I am a destination expert for TA for 3 places, and submit a lot. I try to help a lot with reviews and questions and I have also received a lot of help over there. So to me I like Trip Advisor, and I just follow whatever rules any site has ...

While this thread was started with a different intent, I want to say that the good folk volunteers on a few forums on TA are really helping me out big time.

I leave for Europe in 4 days and due to life being out of control for the past several months, I've had zero time (and I mean zero time) to do any planning. So I finally got time yesterday, did a ton of topic searching and then posted clarification questions. I now feel reasonably prepared to tackle sight seeing in several small German towns surrounding our timeshare. Yeah! Without the help of a few people on TA I'd still be in full panic mode.

As with all vounteer sites (like this one for example!), there are people that are simply wonderful. And those that need to get a life. Or a sense of humor. Or something. TripAdvisor is no different. I had a run in with some people on the Hong Kong Forum a few years ago (the advice I got there was spectacular - a few took issue with my eating choices. Go figure). Anyway, other volunteers in different forums are entirely independent and can be equally wonderful or not. In fact, a site like TA is more 'spread out' than sites like this one, so it's easier to move on if issues occur.

I hope TA, like this forum, last a VERY long time. The help, advice, information, etc. are invaluable and if a few bumps (or grouches) happen once in a while, it's a small price to pay, IMHO.

Had the above been on the TA site they would have removed it for not staying on topic.

That is not true. I have made many posts on TA that were off topic and they were never removed.

Well, I could say the same thing, that's not true.
They removed several of my posts. Once I contacted them to dispute and they put it back up but only because I protested so loudly. This all goes back to them being in total control and if they don't like it it will be taken down !
They play by their own rules and they are not fair or open minded. They only want warm fuzzies.
