  • Long Term Car rental ideas?

I am going to need an extra car for about a month in December when DS comes home for winter break. Anyone know where a good place to start is?
The usual rental companies are outta sight.

Try an auto dealer, one of the larger ones--they sometimes have good deals on longer-term rentals.

Also try off-brand outfits like Rent-a-Wreck, Rent-A-Wreck.com - Car Rental - Rent a used car and save! 30 years of providing great cars and great service! which rent rather more used cars. So do the local outfits. I've gotten good cheap weekly rentals this way.

Enterprise has long term rentals (a month or more program).

You can try zip car http://www.zipcar.com/nyc/find-cars

God help you if you get a door ding--rent it on a credit card that provides rental car "insurance."

Avis has one month rentals for a lot less than the weekly rate--maybe around $700 for the month for a subcompact.

I was thinking about a buy-here-pay-here or check with friends that have 'spare cars.' I have a spare that I would lend to a trustworthy driver. like you! gotta come get it, tho.

FIRST try BIDDING with priceline. I CAN HELP YOU BID. BTW if he is going to need it more than 4 weeks you may just want to buy a cheap used car or lease a new cheap car for him

Thanks for all the ideas --

Rent a Wreck is a little less than the regular companies for monthly, but still not cheap ($700+ for 4 weeks). I will try a local dealer next and also check Zipcar, though they weren't great out here last time I checked.

BG - that would be lovely, but I don't know of any extra cars around (insurance is so costly here, I don't think many people keep them). Plus, I'm not sure I'd want the responsibility....

I'm thinking of using our very local Enterprise on a daily basis, only on the days that I need it. There should be plenty of days I can do without, either working from home or days I'm in the city.
