  • Alaska Credit Card closed without notice

Did anyone have this problem today? I tried to charge something and the card was refused so I used a different CC. I called Bank of America and they told me that the account was closed.

It had something to do with data being compromised and it came from the Government or FBI, I don't remember now. He said that he didn't know what company was involved as they don't tell Bank of America.

I remember that Boeing and Marriott had this problem once and we were notified by both companies but not this time.

We have everything on automatic payment but he told me that I have three months to get that changed but the account is closed and they will send a new one in 5 or 6 days.

    No warning at all.

Thats crazy Emmy. They should have notified you....Thankfully, you had another CC to use. That could cause someone to be terribly embarrassed, if they didn't have another CC to use.

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

Sounds like someone stole you credit card and the fraud department caught it and closed the account. It happened to me once without any notice. When I got the new card and saw how little the fraud department cared about catching the crook, I was reluctant to use it and in the several years since I have only used it rarely. I wonder if my reluctance is unique or if it is a trend for this experience.

Same happened to us. We got a letter around Labor Day telling us some BofA credit card records were possibly stolen in July. And although they did not believe there had been any fraud reported yet, they were closing our account and issuing a new card number. The new cards arrived about a week later. It affected a half dozen auto payments, maybe more. I watched my billing and am sure nothing was erroneously charged to our account.

This has happened to me also. I was actually on a 3 week vacation at the time and the credit card company overnighted the new credit card to me to the resort I was staying at. They did not charge to deliver it to me overnight either.

I just went in our bank account and there is no record anymore of our credit card number. We owe nothing at all.

I had the idea that it had nothing to do with us personally but more with a merchant whose data had been compromised but they wouldn't say who the merchant was.

Someone charged our credit card once and Bank of America called immediately to find out if we had charged that particular purchase. We hadn't and then they asked me if we had any suspicion and I was suspicious of someone so gave them the name of the place. We never went back there but you cannot prove it either.

This time, there was no warning or questioning. This is why I asked if other Alaska card owners had the same problem too.

My purchase was online this morning and I even tried it twice but it said "restricted" and wouldn't complete.

As I posted OY, this is de rigueur for Bof A when a merchant account is compromised. Accounts that might have been compromised are closed en masse and the only notice to cardholders is when a new set of cards appears in the mailbox.

My experience has been that when they suspect that an individual card has been compromised they contact the cardholder directly. But when a merchant account is hacked they cancel all cards that might be associated with that account without directly notifying the cardholders except for notice that accompanies the new card.
