  • Document Scanner Question?

Has anyone here attempted to scan in and maintain your personal documents via a scanner?

I am drowning in paperwork. Statements, bills, EOB's from the insurance companies. I try to keep everything in a 12 month rolling file cabinet. but some documents I need to maintain.

Please share your experience. I am seriously considering getting a docuement scanner for my personal files.

How about all of the paperwork for the Elders

I need to keep a paper trail for my mother. Since she is now in Assisted Living, and burning thru her life savings. She will soon need to apply for medicaid in the next 2 years.

You need to see the reams of paper the insurance companies send her. I am drowning in paper.

Yes, I very frequently scan documents and maintain them. I have done this for years. It is very simple to do. I have an all in one printer, scanner, copier, FAX. I just load the document(s) ( it has a document feeder ) and select where I want the document to go ( IE Acrobat Reader ). The printer software allows me to select the type of document ( text, graphics, photo, etc. ), destination, and quality settings.

It is also very useful for sending documents as just about everybody now accepts documents as an e-mail attachment file. I had to scan 48 pages of documents and send them to my credit union for our recent mortgage refi. I scanned them into Acrobat Reader files and then sent the files as e-mail attachments.

These days, if I keep a copy of a bill it's only the most current. If I find myself needing more, I can log into their website or pick up the phone and get it.

Of course, this doesn't apply very well to medical/insurance items. Those I would keep until I'd been reimbursed, and until the provider considers them paid (and I don't need them for the IRS).
