It's been hot and dry here, although as of June it was hotter in 1988. Plus the air conditioners we have now are more effective because we've been pretty comfy. We have never switched to central air because we don't have heating ducts, so the upstairs bath and laundry room (both face west and no ac in either) get a little warm late afternoons, but that's all.

I thought the bugs would be bad this year with such a mild winter, but so far not so -- I think the dryness is counteracting that.

Good advice. It also makes it easier for the freezer to stay cool when the power is on -- cold air rushes out, but frozen stuff stays put and is already cold when you close the door.

We use milk cartons; gallon size downstairs in the upright freezer and half gallons in the fridge freezers.

I spoke too soon because today is a gloomy day. I see a little bit of blue sky but mostly cloudy. Here is what the beach looks like in Laguna Beach. The temperature is 71°F right now.

The weird thing is, I'm getting used to it. The heat records started around Mem Day, the Indy 500 was hottest ever, then I went to Houston for a whole new HOT, then back home and it's been 90s a lot and not sure how many times we've been past 100.

This isn't desert, this is cowland!

But I can tolerate it a lot better than I thought. Good thing, as we're into 3 digits for a few more days. and no rain coming!

a house fire, started by kids playing with fire, is tonight's latest stupidity that I believe is heat related. Last night was kids having a fireworks fight in the street!!! people aren't liking the fireworks bans but aren't quite understanding the urgency. kids are getting arrested, to make an example.

we need a break in the heat and a major rain. it's hard to cure stupid but a cool off would help stave off the more impulsive outbreaks.

Holy Ice Cubes, Heat Relief Coming to Chicago, DC

Relief from the Heat Wave of 2012 is on the way from Chicago, St. Louis and Nashville to Atlanta, Washington, D.C., and New York City.
Folks passing out from high cooling bills or no means of getting a break from the heat will soon get atmospheric aid.
The massive high pressure area responsible for the dangerous and relentless heat from the Midwest to the South will soon shift its position enough to allow a breath of fresh air to roll in from central Canada. The core of the heat will settle farther west.
Areas from Minneapolis, Chicago, Detroit and St. Louis will begin the change to less extreme heat this weekend from northwest to southeast.
Folks from the Ohio Valley to the central Appalachians on south will have to "wait for it," but the cooler air will get there.

Late in the weekend, the cooler air will reach into the Ohio Valley, central Appalachians and the Northeast.
Finally, seasonable air will push slowly into the swath from Atlanta to Washington, D.C., early next week.

The pattern change will mark an end to 100-degree temperatures in many Midwest and Southern locations and to highs well into the 90s in New York City and Philadelphia.
In Chicago, highs in the 80s are forecast Sunday into next week with the same forecast for the nation's capital next week. In Atlanta, temperatures will trend to near normal in the middle 80s as next week progresses.
The coolest air will be felt from the Upper Midwest to New England, where high temperatures are likely to be in the 70s for many days.

In northern areas, the transition to less extreme heat will be marked with one or more rounds of thunderstorms, prior to a push of less humid air.
In the South as well as many East Coast locations, the trend to less heat is likely to be accomplished by a few days of clouds and thunderstorms. However, humidity levels may stay high or be quick to return next week.

There is the potential for some of the thunderstorms to be damaging at the local level.

While any non-violent rain and lower temperatures are welcomed in the corn belt, this is likely to be the case of too little too late for many fields from Ohio to central Iowa on south.

What the region needs, along with is couple of weeks of below-average temperatures is a couple of days of steady soaking rain. Lower temperatures are forecast, but the rain will fall short of what is needed.

The Heat Wave of 2012, where 100 degrees is the new 90, will continue a while longer over the middle and eastern parts of the nation, but it has eyes for areas in the West in the days ahead. Folks in Boise, Salt Lake City and Spokane may soon get a taste of triple-digit temperatures

                  And they're welcome to it.

Put in three flats of impatiens this year; I think they all would have been fine where I put them most years, but the ones in the front are not doing well. Although I have my doubts that they were really watered every day; I think second son forgot them a couple of nights. Should have gone out and overseen, but he's normally very reliable about watering -- I hadn't thought about the fact that normally we're just watering the strawberry and tomato plants or something else he's likely to eat, so he's pretty motivated.

There's a big patch of wild violets at the base of our maple tree, and I insisted on watering those, too, despite hubby's gripes about "watering weeds." They've perked right up, thank goodness, but the Rose of Sharon bush is looking tired. It needs to be soaked well but hubby's leaving and neither daughter-that's-home nor I can work the faucet. The water hose is hooked onto the hundred and ten year old house because we have more water pressure there than we do in the hundred and eight year old house we live in, and the dratted thing is too stiff for me to work when I've done sanding -- or pretty much anything else involving my hands -- that day. We'll be gone all day tomorrow, but if we remember to call the boys can do it. They've spent the past week at scout camp -- I'll tell them they should be used to the heat by now.

As I've been mentioning elsewhere, it has been over 100 every day here at our summer place for quite awhile now.

The highest high at our winter place in Florida has been 87.

So, should yankees be buying summer places in FL, then going back north for the mild winters?

Up North: Today's High was 103°F at 3:45pm when conditions were Mostly Cloudy

Our FL Place: Today's High was 87°F at 1:05pm when conditions were Partly Cloudy

BTW, I work outside from 6:00 AM until 2:00 PM. It has been 80 at 6:00 AM. By 2:00 I'm pretty much ready to do a lot of nothing the rest of the day.

                    We have a cool-down coming.
